I'm a sucker for initiatives like #dungeon23, so the very first time I read Sean McCoy's twit I got pretty excited about participating. After all, Field Guide to Yokai was born thanks to one of these challenges called inktober.
However, I have a couple of problems with #dungeon23: First of all, I love dungeons, but I'm not into megadungeons at all. Second, such a single-themed challenge that spans a whole year... I think I'd get tired very soon.
But I don't wanna miss the party! So I've decided to give it a spin and adapt it to my own needs. Instead of making one dungeon room a day, I'm going to spend a few minutes (more or less depending on how much time I have) to make a little piece of content for one of those projects that have gotten stuck and I was supposed to release in 2022. I will take a digital route, instead of the notebook proposed, so I can use the content I create easier later. And, of course, I will share my progress at my Patreon and publish the final results here.
The projects I've chosen to start with are:
- Blazing Scrap: A solo RPG game based on Wretched & Alone and inspired by all those futuristic and hyperviolent sports from video games, comics, and movies such as Motorball, Speedball, Rollerball, Triad, Futuresports, Soccer Brawl…
Rules and flavor text for this project are written, but it needs about 43 "entries" to be finished. Small descriptions or scenes that the player faces and correspond to one of the cards of a regular poker deck. Not too far from what it would be like to make a dungeon room, right?
- Yuki (Snow): A scenario for Yokai Hunters Society inspired by “The Blizzard”, one of the episodes in Akira Kurosawa’s film Yume (Dreams, 1990).
This project is missing five locations, a rumors table, and the description of four or five NPCs. The work required here is even more similar to what would need to be done to create a megadungeon. Perfect!
This should comfortably take me into February or March. Once there, we'll see what we continue with!
I hope you join me on this journey!
