Hey guys. Here's a blog post. An actual blog post. Not an announcement about a new project unfortunately. Just a little warning before using Pocket Platformer tool on the Itch desktop app. This could affect the games it makes too. First, let me disclose something:
I actually love Pocket Platformer. It has potential as an engine made specifically made for web-based platformers. It's really awesome in concept and has executed some ideas really well.
Now that's out of the way, let me cut to why I'm making this blog post...and that is how the Itch desktop app opens web games and tools in general. The Itch desktop app opens anything web-based as a separate window that behaves like a standalone program with very little features from a browser. This includes Pocket Platformer and the games it makes. The developer of Pocket Platformer, the-l0bster, implemented a feature onto the web tool itself that designed mostly for prevent accidental closure of the browser tab that contain the tool being run. However, one fatal flaw is that it affects the way a standalone window containing Pocket Platformer behaves as well.
Long story short, once you open Pocket Platformer on the Itch desktop app, you can't really close it unless if you quit out of the Itch desktop app itself. I've talked with the dev about this and it seems that he didn't know about the Itch desktop app before I even mentioned it. So, now what? Well, I know he'll address the issue eventually. However, this frustrates me to a small degree. Like, I don't know about you guys, but it's a bit mildy irritating to me. Especially you just want to use a tool offline. Maybe even play offline. Without a browser too, y'know?
Itch created an amazing desktop app in my opinion and it get works on more as well as Pocket Platformer.
Anyway, to put it simply, if you want to run Pocket Platformer offline within the Itch desktop app, good luck closing it. As a temporary measure, I'd recommend running it online instead.
Anyway, that's about it. I sincerely hope l0bster finds a solution to this problem. It may be small for most though, so who know when.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading this. I hope some find this information helpful.
See ya soon.
Sincerely,
Cheez26, a Pocket Platformer fan.
