New Tabletop Project!

Hey all, it's Josh!

I'm not sure how to announce this, but here it goes: I'm making a new tabletop rpg!

I've been tumbling an idea around in my head for the past few months, and after finally putting (digital) pen to (digital) paper I've got around 1k words. I'd say I'm about... halfway through? So I'd like to talk about it!

In 2023 I'm going to be releasing Pocket Journeys, a Pokemon Powered by the Apocalypse tabletop fan game. This is going to be heavily inspired by the anime, with the game being structured around 3 or so stats with almost none of them actual stats on your Pokemon. Battles will be less about numbers and more about the narrative, and there will be guidelines and rules for catching, bonding, contest-ing, and generally adventuring with your funny little guys.

The release will also come with a guide to a region based on Texas, complete with route guides, story ideas, and a regional Pokedex (including some Fakemon for the region!). This way you have everything you need to play a game right out of the box, the rules, the GM's guide, and a setting guide.

Right now, I've got about 200+ Pokemon in the national 'dex, and with 20+ being Fakemon for the region. I've got the general flow of play ready as well, with more than half of the basic moves complete and some other moves outlined. I've also got 5 classes of characters outlined, with their own moves and level-up progression.

So let's talk about the roadmap! Right now, it looks like this:

  1. Feature-complete, private playtest version
    1. Finish Pokedex for Texas Region
    2. Complete player classes
    3. Finish GM's Guide portion
    4. Touch-ups on basic mechanics
  2. Feature-complete, public playtest version
  3. Revisions & Editing
  4. Final Release

Not everything in my roadmap is fleshed out just cause, well, I don't know what I'll need to edit and refine until playtests happen! As I mentioned, I'd like for this to be fully released in 2023. This means, at my current pace, I think the public playtest should be happening in early 2023. We'll see! I still have a day job after all!

Anyways, that's all for now! Feel free to ask questions about this and I'll be happy to answer when I can!

See ya!
