Last year I made a bunch of games using Bitsy. My goal was to do one a month. For a number of reasons I failed in that goal. But that's okay! I had a lot of fun and got to talk to some really creative people who've made some great games themselves. Hell, most of my followers on this site are people who liked a bitsy I made. I'm grateful for that.
The thing is a project like that--making one game a month--on a packed schedule where you're also trying to be a writer and an artist in other capacities is hard. Even if the games are tiny. They still require effort to be made. Effort that I was spreading thin across other projects. I ended up shoveling out some pretty half-assed games and then eventually just stopped.
Those bad games lived at the top of my itch page with the games that I actually liked making--games that people responded to and said they liked, either through positive ratings, adding it to their own collections, or by telling me directly (do this more often it means a lot to me).
I just changed that. Bitsy 2021 is done (2022 is almost over!). I've hidden the collection on my page and replaced it with My Best Bitsy Games. Each game had to have gotten at least two positive star ratings from the community and had to mean something to me personally for it to make the cut. My other Bitsy games are still on the site. I didn't un-publish them. It's just that some of them were more like shitposts than actual games or I didn't really try that hard at all. There's a place for shitposts. Bitsy as shitpost is an art in-of-itself and I would never want people to not make those or look down on them. But mine were not good. lol.
Going forward, any Bitsy games I make will probably get placed into a tentative list and then--depending on response I'll move them into this new collection. Shitposts won't be surfaced or displayed as prominently or, if they do, they'll be clearly labeled so that people don't take them as seriously.
I'm excited to make Bitsy games again. I've yet to make one since it was updated with built-in sfx and music tools. I can't promise everything will be a banger like Crabs! is, but hopefully, with the lesson learned that I don't like to make things that are as low effort as some of my stuff was, things will at least be more interesting going forward. It might take a bit. It might not be one a month. But I am going to do... something.
Thanks for reading.
PS. if you haven't played them yet go check out the games in the new collection and leave a comment or a review or something. I'd love to know what you think. :)
Now... Back to working on NaNoWriMo. :|
