Robot Resources VN: Dev Blog #3

I am working on a visual novel. The goal is for it to be a short experimental game that blends an engaging story with job coaching advice.

I have been building the prototype for the game. The visual inspiration is taken from the big pixel character animations of Tamagotchi, the painted set pieces of Game & Watch (like Popeye), and the clunky movement and sound from early Game Boy games. It gives a vibe that is a mix of minimalism, analog horror, and a dash of nostalgia (at least for an early millennial like myself). The game will feature dialogue choices, changing environments, classic sounds, and some unexpected twists & turns…

The principal writing is complete. The focus is now on programming, creating art assets*, and playing around with Ren’Py features. Sure, there is the 90% of the game that uses this minimal visual perspective/art style noted above, but the end sequence is shaping up to be expectation bending and, hopefully, UI breaking. Here are the storyboards for the last sequence, in case you cannot wait.

Thank you for your continued interest!
