Hello! We're Ben, Everest, and Caro — three game designers and interdisciplinary artists interested in emergent narratives, structured randomness, and gameplay driven by friction and chance.
This Saturday, October 23rd, we will be speaking at Big Bad Con Online about oracle games and the idea of breakage: the moment when a story (or poem, game, or artwork) mutates, put under the pressure of incorporating the new. Despite the highly frictioned nature of this kind of storytelling, it is generous; it allows surprise to occur in play without inherently becoming failure.
We are bundling the following games together as a small selection of our work that put some of our thoughts in this space into practice. In these games, oracles take the form of punch cards, of birdwatching, of scrounging through junk drawers; breakage emerges from asynchronous epistolary correspondence, from survival-horror resource management, from the limits of bounded geography.
