The AGD Slam Jam is back! But this time, it's been shrunk down to a teeny weeny smol Tiny Slam Jam! If you're a South Australian developer, artist or composer who is keen on creating video games and game assets over the weekend, this jam is for you!

Unlike the inaugural Slam Jam, this one is Tiny! That means you only have 48 hours to get something together. Which basically makes it a normal game jam... But we're going to keep calling it Tiny!

Submissions are open for video games and video game assets such as 3D models, concept art, sound effects and music! If it can be uploaded, and it's about games, it's probably ok!

Join the AGD Discord's #slam-jam channel to hang out and share your progress with other participants!

This jam was inspired by the fantastic AGD Arcade Jam last year. Thanks Mark!

Check out the theme, rules, and FAQ below!

Thanks to Alex (@logo.byalex.art) for the logo and style guide!

This is the Tiny Slam Jam: Arcade! You'll be making a something fit for an arcade cabinet!

Chiefly, this means you are restricted to:

  • 4 or 8 directional input
  • Maximum six digital buttons
  • 4:3 aspect ratio gameplay space

Please note, these restrictions are specific to game submissions - if you plan to submit something else you can just take the theme "Arcade" as your prompt!

There are four mutators, which are optional restrictions on your jam submission. You can pick and choose which ones you use, or decide to use none of them!

  • SCUFFED CONTROLS: You have made the bold choice to create a game in a genre that doesn't really suit the control restrictions!
  • SINGLE SCREEN: Make like Pacman and put all your action on a single game screen!
  • LITTLE BUDDY: Your buddy, your chum, your favourite little guy... Must be protected at all costs!
  • SMOL: Make a tiny game!

  • Your entry must be started and completed during the jam (6PM ACDT Friday 25 November to 6PM ACDT Sunday 27 November 2022)
  • A game submission must follow the theme-specific rules:
    • Up to six digital input buttons
      • Any buttons that are either on or off, like controller face buttons and keyboard keys
    • Optionally, a single 4 or 8 way directional input
      • Effectively this means if you want to use controller stick input, you need to limit the directions your actors can move!
    • 4:3 aspect ratio gameplay
      • You can put graphics outside of this space, but they cannot provide any gameplay effect!
      • 4:3 is the traditional TV aspect ratio. Some classic examples include 800x600, 1024x768, and 1440x1080
  • You are permitted to use free or paid assets, code and plugins to create your entry
    • You should note any substantial third-party content in your entry description so it's clear what your contribution was
  • Your submission must be playable/viewable
    • Windows or WebGL builds are recommended, this is not a hard requirement however
    • If you created a 3D asset, you should include a turnaround video!
  • Your entry must not infringe on the intellectual property or copyright of any person or entity
    • This generally means no fan art or games, but if you have permission from the rights holder, go for it!
  • By submitting, you agree that footage of your entry (with clear attribution) may be used by the organisers of the jam for the purpose of creating a jam showreel video, promoting future jams, and for no other reason

  • Should I stay up for the entire 48 hours?
    • Absolutely not! You'll be amazed at how much better you work after a good night's rest! You should schedule your working hours to ensure you have some time away from the computer for breaks, and time to get a good sleep!
  • Can I participate in the jam by myself?
    • Of course! Sometimes the best team is just you and your ideas!
  • Are there any prizes or ratings?
    • Nope, the goal is just to make cool stuff! If you want, you can create your own rating system and put it in a little file on your computer and rate all the games yourself using your proprietary rating system that nobody understands, but you know. You know!
  • Does my submission need to match the theme?
    • Yes! It's even in the rules! Past the rules, you can interpret it any way you like! I understand the highly prescriptive input might be a bit annoying, but creativity is at its best under restriction!
  • I don't like these restrictions! Can I ignore them?
    • Well, nobody will stop you from making a game on the weekend! I understand that you might not gel with the rules, but some of the best games have been built under stricter limitations! If you want to submit a game to the jam, it has to follow the rules!
  • Does my submission need to use one or all of the Mutators?
    • Nope! Use of the Mutators is totally up to you - they are just there to help inspire cool designs or give you some more boundaries to work within.
  • I don't live in South Australia, can I participate in the jam?
    • If you consider yourself a South Australian, sure! We're not checking IDs!
  • I have an existing project I would like to complete and submit in the jam, is this ok?
    • Jam submissions should have been started after 6PM ACDT Friday 25 November (basic project setup before that is fine!). In future we would love to hold jams focused on finishing projects, but the intent of this jam is to build something new.
  • Where the heck is the Matchmaker???
    • At the moment I'm not planning to run the Matchmaker due to low participation last jam - this may change but if you want to find a team, post in the Discord channel!
  • How do I know if my submission infringes intellectual property or copyright?
    • If you're using existing content (images, characters, stories, music, etc) and do not have express permission to use it, you're probably infringing intellectual property or copyright. If you're making fan art, its probably infringement. Free or paid assets generally come with a licence allowing to use them! If you're still not sure, feel free to ask in the Discord channel!
  • I'm already doing the Game Off Jam! Can I still participate in this jam?
    • If your game for the Game Off Jam meets the rules of this jam (beyond the start date, obviously), get in touch! We can make some exceptions for dual jammers.
  • Why is it called the Slam Jam?
    • everybody get up its time to slam now we got a real jam going down welcome to the slam jam heres your aim make a game at the slam jam
