4MB Game Jam 2025

Prize Pool : $100

THEME: It will be revealed when the jam starts!

About

4MB Game Jam 2025 is the third edition of the 4MB Jam. It is a one month long game jam about creating a game that fits within four megabytes. This limitation challenges developers to come up with clever ways to make the most out of it. If you have any questions or want to chat with the rest of the community, you can join our discord (link at the bottom).

Don't start working on your game until the jam begins, you have a full month to finish it, so time shouldn't be an issue.

Fun vs Size Categories

This year, games will be ranked within two categories:

  • The fun category; this category is all about gameplay. As long as the entry is below 4MB, the participant shouldn't worry about the size of their submission. The final rank of the submission is determined by the ratings earned in sound/music, graphics, theme and gameplay.
  • The size category; this category is all about making the smallest possible game. Here the criteria that are evaluated are size, technique, value and theme.
Submissions are ranked for both categories, thus participants can win in either or both of those. Participants may also win the community award irrespective of any criteria as the community award is won from earning the votes of the 4MB Jam community.

Rules

You can find the full details of the rules in this gist page. However you should be fine with this basic summary of the rules:

  • Your submission is under 4 MB.
  • You are allowed to team up with as many people as you like or you can work on your game alone.
  • Your submission is either a Windows, Linux Mint or MacOS desktop application.
  • Your game doesn't violate Canadian federal law.
  • Your game is SFW.
  • You worked on your game within the allotted time and not before.
  • Your submission is a video game.
  • Your submission isn't a mod/hack.
  • Your submission isn't an online multiplayer only game.
  • Your submission doesn't stream nor download content from the internet.
  • Your submission can be downloaded for free for the duration of the judging period.
  • If you submit more than one version of your game, you should indicate which version should be the one evaluated by the judges.
  • You may submit a web version of your game as long as a desktop version is available.

Dependencies which aren't shipped by default on MacOS, Linux Mint or Windows count towards the size of your game.

Judging

Games will be ranked by judge using a custom ranking system. The judging period will be during the first half of June. Perhaps the whole month if there are many more submissions than anticipated.

Prizing

A golden foil certificate of achievement will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and community's choice awards. You can see a photo of last year's certificate for an idea of what it should look like:

Note: the frame and the plushies are not included

The winner(s) of 1st place will also get what's in the prize pool. But if we get more than anticipated, the other winners could see some of that awarded to them as well.
