Two more Jack Cleavers (one for the end of the chain, and one to replace the Queen on the right-middle) and this build is finished, I think. I’m pretty sure that another cleaver is better than the Chef’s Hat.

The Queen Cleaver in the middle on the bottom has too many mods to drop.

(1 edit)

You technically get one more activation out of each cleaver if the shield is adjacent to the tape, but it’s not going to be relevant for a very long time.

I think I might stop here. This grind isn’t particularly interesting or fun, and waiting for the animations to stop is very tedious since the game pauses if I change tabs. I think two more Jacks to replace 2 Queens is the most damage this setup can do. It would be better if the middle-bottom Queen were a Jack, but I ended up putting a fair amount of buttery rage on it

In this sort of setup, Jacks are the best cleaver for the middle slots since they do 1 extra damage. Queens fill in the corners since the Kings can trigger them which triggers all of the taped cleavers again. I think it’s best to use butter (golden whetstones) on the King on the left since it gets the most benefit from Bag of Knives. Ideally you’ll never put rage on a Queen. You know what they say about a woman scorned.

Gemstone Heart might be better than Vampiric Crystal. It seems that vampirism doesn’t trigger spikes on King (the boss, not the cleaver), but it does on Repexcutioners? I could swear that my health wasn’t going down at some point but maybe that was when I was using gemstone hearts. It seems so very long ago… With a Heart (or Healing Whetstone) adjacent to any tape, you’d only end up losing 2 life for each of the Corner Queens since they aren’t getting the benefit.

All of that said, this build gets very boring very quickly. The worst part is that the animations have a seemingly exponential increase in duration with each activation.

It might become interesting again once I am not able to one-activation kill the normal mobs on a 3-mob fight, leading to a second turn, but that seems to be literal months of playtime away and not worth the slog.

I’d recommend that you avoid this build if your goal is to have fun. If you want to hit high dungeon levels, you’re probably better off with the Hercule the Assassin build. (multiple Hercule’s Pavise and other shields duct taped to an assassin’s blade with lots of rage and golden whetstone buffs). It’s still kind of a cookie-clicker build, but at least you won’t waste several minutes every fight waiting for animations to end.

To be fair, you can get pretty far with a single row of duct tape. I have tested it and the animations don’t quite get to the ridiculous trudge that they do with the tape extension. (thus making Chef’s Hat a better QoL item, even though it’s probably significantly less damage)

Found a game-breaker. The Fluffy Cotton (top left) gives two mana when you use a want, so the ethereal and first wands refill a mana when used. I have Ring of Doom. The only problem is getting block, but I still have some time (and a broken ring). Edit: Not as good as I initially thought. First "good" build and got exited.

(1 edit) (+1)

This still seems very underwhelming to me given that the frog totem gives you 3 free mana every turn and you don’t have to juggle wands.

Maths: Each wand is (at least) 2 spaces and can be used only once per turn, so even with a non-wand mana sink, that’s 2 mana per turn for 3 slots instead of 3 mana per turn for one slot. Even the Wizard Cap seems better than Fluffy Cotton at 4 mana for 1 slot and 1 energy, but that depends on how much damage you are doing per energy.

With your 4 wands, that’s 8 mana per turn for 9 slots. It can never come close to the mana per space efficiency of frog totem.

I think the best case for it is stacking the AoE weapon wand with Ring of Doom, but that will quickly fall off in endless. I think it should be able to beat the first loop of the game, though.

How is that game breaking? If I remember correctly, fluffy cotton disables wands for one turn, so that's balanced.

very impressive game dare i say, i like the mechanics of the game a lot

(1 edit)

Welp I was able to beat the game, first run as archer after all my other builds died to spikes on final boss.

I got the bomb relic and at first used phantasmal shivs and spikes + blocking which was painfully slow, but then found the phantasmal arrow wand that carried me thru the rest of the game. For most of the game after I got the build together I was ending every fight before enemy first turn, but it seems like it gets outscaled pretty fast in free play.

Really fun game.

currently playing in hte browser, missed the boat kickstarting so i can play on steam :(

that said, i have a CRAZY build going right now...

(+2)

If you organize shields like this:

🟦🟨🟦

🟦🟨🟦 the mirror shields will be used more

(1 edit)

floor 11. TWO HUNDRED GOLD :D mostly from my gold bow and piggy bank..... then i died to some sables and a crossbowman via LACK OF DEFENSE ;-;

(+3)

@Jaspel Idea to make the rose feel useful: Have it scale based on the number of roses in your inventory.

Each turn: Adds 1 spikes for each Rose in your backpack.

Or

Each turn: Adds 1 spikes.

This item gets +1 spikes for each adjacent and diagonal Rose.
(+1)

This is a great idea! Rose is one of the most underwhelming items imo, way outclassed by spiked helmet which add block and can be buffed by other items.

The Most Harmless Build in Backpack Hero.

(+1)

This was turn 4 btw

Against the final boss

The greatest build: An expert bow would have improved it

This is probably my best build yet. I just defeated double bats with this build AND the fox guy. Well see how far this goes.

(1 edit)

Made it at floor 17. I got to the shadows and couldn't keep up with them and lost. I needed more regen. Also, I found out that the damage increases the more you deny the curse...I got not 1, not 2, but 3 double shadow encounters at the end...unfortunate to say the least, but the farthest I've ever gotten thus far.

Mom can we have king Cleaver

Mom: We have King Cleaver at home

King Cleaver at Home:

lvl100 :D

Why the heck is the shield spirit upside down?

So far I've made it through 3 loops but haven't gotten anything but Jack's cleavers since the 1st loop.

Ayyyyyy finally got the archangel armor structure build this died to poison on floor 16 lol

I defeated backpack hero without blocking!

How would we know if you just went to the second last boss with a shield and just discarded it before?

I supposed you just have to trust me! And there's no incentive for me to do that, my bag is filled with gems and energy items. There's no room for shields and even if i have a space for shield, the amt of block provided is not worth it. I rather have energy items to let me deal more damage. Also the shield will reduce my energy from 4 to 3 because of berserker ring's effect.

You could prove that by going into the stats screen and seeing "Player Armor Lost"/"Player Armor Gained"

(4 edits) (+1)

I think the math works out so that duct tape and royal cleavers end up doing more damage per slot than Chef’s Hats since each royal cleaver activates each other cleaver in the chain, effectively granting more than 100% damage.

The Vampiric Crystal reflects the life-draining nature of the Aristocracy.

Moar Tape

dang. thasa lotta cleavers. also the vampiric crystal causes each and every single cleaver to do an extra 1 dmg.

Not all of them; only the ones adjacent to the duct tape.

This build is honestly the best. Attacking with two scaling weapons by shielding is so good. And i have the healing magic on the side to stall if i need more damage. It comes with haste rage and poison removal

(1 edit)

stupid bats and their stupid poison... wish i'd gotten a poison remover thing. would go in place of one of my gemstone hearts. preferably the left one. removes more poison that way.

am i the only person who thinks there should be a way to skip the tutorial? if so, there should be a way to skip the tutorial. or maybe export a save file. every time i reload i have to go through the tutorial ;-;

(+1)

Press M on the main screen!

oh. thanks! :D

Yea that's 240HP

should i go for an archer or doru build?

Archery is one of the greatest builds, along with shield spike. I would say go for archery and hope for an expert bow. Those things shred.

thanks!

super good run, got messed up by the salamander and toad mage combo. curse of spikes was fine (I had enough shield to last me a long time) but the curse of poison did me in.

0 energy build. I just reorganize the letters so that they can run twice along the machetes :3 The middle one will hit for 94 and the other two for 49 :D

floor 15 died to badge boss

I don't know why I have been avoiding this lol. It's actually a great game-

Glad you like it!

Epic run - great game!

Lmao please tell me more about the bendy arrow that's awesome.

basically the two rows/collumns it's in gives it boost, like how with a normal arrow it says; "when empty space below (while arrow is facing down), add +#"

It does that but for both the rows it is in.

Nice!

first win with this god build

There are definitely a lot of bugs in this game, but you wouldn't know that until you tried different builds. I just got the spirit shield and clicked the shield, but it didn't work properly. I had the club and kept hitting the shield and the weapon seemed like it was working, however it wasn't causing any damage, only adding weak....this is quite unfortunate when you are trying to explore other ways of playing, only to be found with failure due to bugs in the game. I hope that this is all rememdied in the final product.

(+3)

Is it just because the shield spirit effect? Whenever the shield spirit activates an item, it gives -1 to it's damage. So you might have just used the club too many times.

Deleted 1 year ago

I found out the problem. I didn't real the shield spirit text stating that -1 damage comes off every use. I thought it meant that only 1 point of damage was to be taken off as a whole, not over and over again.

So I think this is a glitch. I have 6 open spaces and the ethereal arrow didn't want to place right...it kinda killed my run. Thankfully it was just starting, but still, big bummer :<

Yep there's a glitch where items that summon items(like old log or ethereal wand) make grids that can't be placed light up. The arrow wand can only summon arrows on it's column, afaik.

ah, thank you.

guess i'll just die  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

uhhhhhhhhhh i may or may not have gotten sophlocked by the speaker's clultists-i am unable to deal or take damage, as they are doing mass weakness and i don't have poison and also there are no cultist blade dudes

edit: actually never mind, thank God for the reorganize for this item things. i got a vampiric crystal which will make it possible but EXTREMELY slow

update: i have 389 weakness and 420 slowness. this is gonna be slow. i also got up to max hp using the vampiric crystal

my weakness

heyyyy they reached over 1k

i may or may not be curious as to if there is a limit to how high the debuffs go, i'll let you all know when i find the limit. currently at 3k.

update on that: might give up, as the limit is over 10,000 O_O no that is not a joke

You could also have just scratched and scratched. It's how I got out.

good point, thanks. i used that to speed up the process. I'M FREEEEEEE

lost the run to a snake and a fire gecko. this is why i hate virtual reptiles.

(2 edits)

Bug: Shield Spirit doesn't activate Wizard's Staff even though it pulses as if it was used

it does you need to give it mana to proc it even though it states it upfront uses all adjacent weapons

yea i figured that out with a jade axe, kinda dumb honestly

yessssss finally i have gotten a good cleaver run (almost all of my runs) im so happy see ya in endless

How do i protect from fire effect?

(+1)

Lots of blocks.

(+1)

Blocks. Fire is counted just like a normal hit. Poison on the other hand isn't...but fire just needs blocking power.

(+1)

Poison is hard to deal with.

(3 edits)

so, uh, yes. poison. uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 1056 of it on turn one-

basically what i did was i had a crossbow and 2 poison arrows and some energy items. used energy items to use a buncha poison arrows, then i, uh, used 2 poison doubling potions

Nice

(-1)

I found a glitch... Idk how it happened but as you can see I have the whole backpack unlocked but I have two more levels to go in the top left

did you go to the enchanted forest instead of the deep caves? (also nice wall)

No I stayed on the normal path. (also thx)

how about repeatedly quitting to get better rng?

I love this mana build because I can spam click and recharge with the book lol, still I would like extra energy accessories.

Also, this makes me imagine all those wizard stories I read where a wizard owns a wizard tower. They can attack with abandonment and not worry about running out of mana or about their defense because all wizards are known to be almost omnipotent when using wizard towers(at least from the novels I' read).

Mana Build(Spam Clicker)

For Anyone wondering how to beat the game consistently: If you stumble upon a ring of doom and any book that converts stamina into mana you'v got yourself a broken mage build

another way is to mod the game to give all enemies 1 hp /j
