We've seen zines have a big revival over the last few years - we want to keep that momentum going. Grow it. Encourage people to make these things and just get them out there.
So HOUDINI Magazine is starting something. A yearly zine jam we're calling the Zine-O-Rama. It's unranked. The goal? Just get people to make something. Low pressure. We want to see all types of submissions.
(We're using "zine" pretty loosely here - the only rule is it has to be something you can reasonably print at home or the library, fold up, and carry around to give to someone in person. Leave a few on the bar counter. Trade one for a smoke at a show. Hand them out at family cookouts. Slip them into library books. Whatever.)
It could be:
- Origami printables
- Tabletop RPGs
- Poetry
- Sketchbook samples
- Horror stories
- Political screeds
- Protest guides
- Recipe books
- Literally anything
Make it in Photoshop. Scan it by hand. Use a tool like Decker for digital versions. However you want to do it. Just make sure your submission includes a PDF file for printing.
For the month of April going into May, we just want to see as many people as possible making zines, printing zines, sharing zines. Self-publishing thoughts and creations that can't be pigeonholed into an algorithm.
This is why we love zines:
- They bridge our digital lives with meatspace
- They're 100% by the people, zero corporate oversight
- We're not making these to "game the system" or sit next to some fucking Raid: Shadow Legends ad
- We're doing this because it's human, it's fun, and we want to share
Houdini Magazine presents: Zine-O-Rama Jam #1
You've got until the end of April. We're hyped to see what y'all create. And I promise - a ton of these will get featured on HOUDINI Magazine and showcased to our audience.
We're looking forward to:
- Growing our zine selection
- Giving back to the community
- Promoting everyone who participates
Let's make some zines!
