Every other jam wants you to make something good.

Make the worst game you possibly can. The most unintuitive controls, art you drew in five minutes, a soundtrack you recorded by shrieking into your phone. Broken, ugly, confusing, whatever. The worse it is, the better you'll do.

Never made a game before? Honestly, you might have an advantage.

Our Cause

This jam is also raising money for a local public school in the Bay Area. Our goal is to raise $1,000 total, with the funds going toward a specific classroom, program, or set of materials identified by the school.

You do not need to donate to participate, submit, vote, or win. Donations have no effect on judging. More on this later.

Dates (Pacific Time)

  • Jam: Oct 14, 12:00 AM → Oct 26, 11:59 PM
  • Voting: Oct 27 → Nov 9, 11:59 PM
  • Winners announced: by Nov 12

Theme: There is one, and you'll find out when the jam starts. Yes, your terrible game still has to fit it. Sorry!

How it's judged: Every participant who submits rates the other entries. A higher score means the game is "worse," which in this jam actually means better.

  • Worst Overall
  • Worst Controls
  • Ugliest Art
  • Worst Sound
  • Theme (higher = fits the theme better)

Final ranking is by average score across all categories. Play and rate as many entries as you can. Entries with too few ratings may not place.

Prizes

  • 1st: $150 Amazon gift card
  • 2nd: $100 Amazon gift card
  • 3rd: $50 Amazon gift card

Prizes are paid by the jam host (gamedesignaccount) and sent as digital codes to each winner's email within 14 days of results. Teams get one prize per placement and split it themselves. Additionally, EVERY submission will be guaranteed genuine, specific feedback.

Bad Games for a Good Cause

We're using The Worst Game Jam to raise money for local public schools.

Our first goal is to raise $1,000, which we plan to use to fund a specific classroom, program, or set of materials identified by one of the schools we're working with.

If we raise more, we'll keep going:

  • $1,000: Fund one identified school or classroom need
  • $1,500: Support an additional classroom or project
  • $2,000: Support another school, classroom, or program

We're currently contacting schools in the area to find specific needs where the money can be used properly. We'll update this page with the recipients and projects once they're confirmed.

Donating is completely optional. You do not need to donate to enter, vote, or win, and donations have no effect on judging or prizes.

Rules

  • Solo or teams, any size.
  • Any engine or tool. Web builds are strongly recommended, since more people will play them.
  • Premade assets are fine; credit them on your game page.
  • Make your game during the jam dates.
  • Bad ≠ offensive. No hateful, harassing, sexual, or shock content. It'll be disqualified.
  • Nothing harmful. Your game can be broken, but it can't mess with the player's computer: no malware, no fake viruses, no deleting files, and no flashing lights without a warning.
  • AI-generated content is allowed if you disclose it on your game page (say what was AI-made: art, code, sound, etc.).
  • The host can disqualify entries that break the rules.
  • You own your game. Everything you make stays 100% yours. By participating, you just give the host permission to play, stream, screenshot, and share your game (with credit to you) to promote the jam and its results!
