Virtual Reality Knights of UCF hosted Game Jam! Come together in groups or challenge yourself in solo to make a VR game under a limited time!
The focus of this jam will be to create a VR game based on the unique game design fundamentals related to the medium. Attention to optimization, UI, and user experience is critical to creating a good VR game.
For VR games in particular, models that have previously cut corners by not having certain faces hidden to the player or lower textures now have to have more detail and form all in the round. This is due to the interaction that VR provides and the freedom it creates for the players to see things they have never be able to before. Additionally, models have to still be under tight restrictions in texture and sizes else scenes and builds will not run in stand alone headsets.
Environments themselves need to be well detailed out as well as users in VR can move around easily depending on locomotion and discover things that would be impossible in non VR games. Additionally, UI in VR is typically done in the world space or around controllers to prevent UI from flooding the player's eyes. Haptics and audio also play a huge part in creating an imbodied experience.
VR builds can be in .exe or .apk, and use toolkits and plugins not typical in default game development software. Coders will have to not only optimize for these types of builds, but have to research the toolkits in time if they are not familiar.
