Welcome to the UTAS Programming Club Game Jam (PCJam) 2025!

This game jam is a chance for you to get together in a team or even on your own and build a game from scratch in just under 3 days. Teams are softly capped at 3 people, but we will not refuse any larger teams.

The PCJam is open to current UTAS students only(including AICOSS), but alumni are allowed to spectate and offer advice to participants. Students will need to provide their student ID upon submission.

If attending in person at some point over the 4 days including the showcase, please also indicate your attendance via our Rubric event: https://campus.hellorubric.com/?eid=37105

The THEME for this jam is: Better Late Than Never
All games made for this jam must be designed to fit the theme of "Better Late Than Never". You are allowed to interpret and adapt this phrase in anyway to create your ideas.

Details: The jam will run from Friday, 18th July, at 4:00 PM to Monday, 21st July, at 11:00 AM, with an optional showcase immediately following, which should be done by 1:00 PM.  We will be there from 3:30 PM so be there a little bit beforehand to find groups and learn about the theme. The intro, including theme reveal as well as the showcase, will be streamed via Discord for anyone not in attending in person.

The jam will be held in Centenary 140, Sandy Bay Campus (that's across from Cianos/Harvard Lecture Theaters.), see https://maps.utas.edu.au/d/poi/1000554240.

ONLY USE ASSETS THAT EITHER YOU HAVE CREATED DURING THE JAM OR HAVE A CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSE!
Any assets (art, music, etc.) used in the jam must be either create within the jam period by you or your team, or be sourced from CC sites. All assets not created by you or your team must be referenced in a README.txt file along with your submission, or in a dedicated section of your game's page.
A good place to find free to use sound effects are at freesound.org, good art assets can be found at kenney.nl, and Darren Curtis has awesome free music that can be found on his website at darrencurtismusic.com.

FAQs (will be updated as more questions come in/more info is available)

  • Can I submit a game I am currently working on or plan to work on before the start time?
    • No. In the spirit of the game jam, the game must be started and finished within the event time period. Generic assets such as simple props, sfx, or music made prior to the game can be reused in the jam, but the bulk of the game and its systems will need to be created during the jam.
  • Will I be able to submit my game after the closing deadline?
    • Please submit something before the deadline, regardless of the level of completeness. If a build runs a few minutes over, we might be able to allow the upload, but do not rely on this as the showcase will be ongoing. A good strategy is to aim for 10:00 AM which should give ample time to find any issues with the build or uploading.
  • Will I be able to continue working on my game after the jam?
    • Of course! The games created for the jam are the work their creators and we encourage participants to continue working on their projects post jam, either to round off any rough edges, add cut mechanics or advance it into a higher level of production. It is your game, and you are allowed to do whatever you want with it.
    • If you wish to continue developing your game, we suggest you join the UTASPlay Discord server where you can continue to develop your game with fellow students, alumni and local industry game developers! :D https://discord.gg/JH66crqq4s
  • Am I limited to a particular engine?
    • No! You are allowed to use any engine you would like to create this game. You could use a widely used engine such as Unity or Godot,  or if you feel up to the challenge, you can create your game in an engine you designed! As long as the game can be exported to an executable or WebGL game to be played on itch.io, then you are welcome to use whatever engine you'd like.
  • Can I submit a malware laced game?
    • Do you even have to ask? We will not tolerate submissions that contain malware, and we reserve the right to escalate the issue to authorities, which could result in penalties or the termination of your academic study.
  • Do I need to have a team already worked out before this event, or can I work solo?
    • If you already know who you want to work in a team with, then that's grea,t but there'll also be an opportunity to find other people looking for a team at the start if there are enough numbers, or you may be able to add your skills to an existing team. You can also work solo. You do you!
  • Do I need to be there the whole time? Can I sleep there?
    • No. And No. Work as much or as little as you like, but we can't be responsible for or condone people sleeping on campus. Make sure to get a good sleep each night and don't work too hard! Just try to be there for the start and end of the event.
  • I'm from Launceston / elsewhere. Can I still participate?
    • You are welcome to participate via the Programming Club Discord server https://discord.gg/nuzS2UvGB9, and share your work digitally, but there are no plans for a hosted event in Launceston. The team will be lurking the Discord throughout the event, so we'd love for you to participate through that!
  • Is there a prize!?
    • There will be no prize for this game jam. You will win if you successfully submit a game and you will be congratulated accordingly. There will be a showcase on-site on the Monday so that you can demonstrate your game if you wish.
  • Do I need to bring my own hardware?
    • Yes. You should bring your own equipment if you wish to participate in person. We may be able to use some of the computers in Centenary 139 but don't rely on this as others may be using them, you won't be able to install any software, and we can't guarantee any software e.g. Unity will already be installed. Additionally, all equipment will need to be fully vacated between days, so bringing a full desktop setup is ill-advised.
    • You are responsible for the security of your own belongings at this event.
    • Bring headphones if your game will have audio, to be respectful of others :)
  • Will there be food/drink?
    • No. This is not a catered event.
    • No eating in the labs (bottled water only).

We hope to see you there!
