The goal of Fungus is to provide a free, open source tool for creating interactive storytelling games in Unity 3D. Fungus is designed to be easy to learn for beginners to Unity 3D, especially for people with no coding experience. For power users, it provides an intuitive, fast workflow for visual scripting and interactive storytelling. Fungus is being used to create Visual Novels, Point and Click Adventure Games, Childrens Stories, Hidden Object Games, eLearning apps and also some frankly weird stuff which defies classification!
Fungus is for writers, illustrators, animators and game designers, especially visual novel & interactive fiction authors. Many people using Fungus are creating games in Unity for the very first time. It is a popular choice for game jams and game design courses.
๐ Timeframe:
The jam runs from 1st July to 31st July 2023 to give everyone a chance to create a beautiful game.
Voting takes place from the 1st August to 5th August 2023 and is open to any contributor in this jam.
๐ Jam Themes:
The theme of this year's jam is: Lost in the Wilderness
This means anything that has to do with this theme is fine.
It can be as abstract as you want, but please explain what you did for others to be able to vote fairly.
๐ General Rules:
You can work solo or in teams.
The game can be for adults, include horror or else, but keep in mind that minors might join, so, please tag your work for potential triggers and abide the general Itch.io rules when submitting adult content.
You can start collecting ideas, make first sketches, get used to Fungus and write a script before the jam starts.
You may not: Create the game itself, the flowcharts, the final artwork or the itch.io page before the jam starts.
You have to provide a screenshot of (one of) your flowcharts when entering your game to the jam as a link to the image.
If you do not provide all information needed in the submission page, admins may delete your game from the jam at any time.
When posting about your game on Twitter, feel free to use the hashtag #madewithfungus to tag your work!
Don't forget to add the Itch.io tag "fungus" to your game, too, so that we can find your game and potentially add it to our showcase list.
You might ask: "I never used Fungus, how do I do it???" - Do not worry, we have a lot of great resources to share for beginners! First of all, there are the videos made by JollyFranchers that guide you through the full process of creating a game with Fungus, without a single line of code!
You can find some examples in the Fungus examples you download on the GitHub, they are very useful when creating your very first games with it. There are also a few examples and inspirations on what you can create with Fungus here:
Install the latest version of Unity. (Versions 2018-2021 are suggested to use with Fungus)
Launch Unity and create a new Project by selecting File > New Project.
Select 'Use Defaults for 2D' when creating the new project.
Download the latest Fungus .unitypackage from Github
Note that there is the normal package, and then "Compatibility" is for older versions of Unity, and "Lite" is without examples to work with.
Import Fungus into the new project by selecting Assets > Import Package > Custom Package.
๐ Why is Fungus not in the Unity Asset Store anymore?
When attempting to publish 3.13.7 to the asset store we ran into a number of rule violations due to changes in asset store package requirements. Until these are resolved we will not be shown on the asset store. You can get the latest versions on the Github page, though.
๐ How can I contribute to Fungus?
