Welcome to UC's first game jam, open to all UC students! You and your team will get 1 week to make a game relating to a theme, which will be released when the jam begins. After the jam ends, there will be a voting period where everyone plays and rates each others' games. When the voting period is over, a winner will be announced.

This game jam is a great way to apply the skills you have been learning during your degree or practice skills that you are interested in.

And the theme is.......

*Duality*

☯️ The quality or state of having two different or opposite parts or elements ☯️ - Merriam-Webster
🌓 The state of combining two different things 🌓 - Cambridge
♥️ A situation in which two opposite ideas or feelings exist at the same time 💙 - Collins

But you can interpret the theme however you wish. Be creative and have fun!

How Do I Join?

  • Press the 'Join Jam' button at the top of this page.
  • Go to the community tab on the itch.io page and make a post under the topic titled "put your team name / team members / student IDs here" with the names/student IDs of everyone in your team (or just you if you are going solo).

At least one person in your team will need an itch.io account so that you can submit your game. You will also need an itch.io account if you want to vote on other people's games.

What is a Game Jam and How Does it Work?

A game jam is an event where teams create a game that relates to a theme in a short period of time. After the submission deadline, you will play everyone else's game and rate them on a set of criteria. At the end of the voting period, a winner is decided based on the average rating their game received.

When the game jam starts, we will release the theme. You should try to make your game relate to the theme in some way, but you are not required to follow the theme.

After the submission deadline, you will have a few days to play and vote on other teams' submissions.  We will hold an event on the following Thursday (17th of September)  to get your final votes in and announce the winners. Please attend this event in case you are one of them!

I've Never Made a Game / I Don't Know How To Code!

You don't need experience in game development or coding to participate. There are many different skills that go into making a game, such as 2D and 3D art, sound design, music production, game design, animation, programming and more. If you are for example studying (or interested in) art, design, 3D modelling, music, audio effects etc., your skills will be highly valued in your team. Of course, if you know how to code you are highly encouraged to join too!

We are also hosting an Intro to Godot Workshop on the 7th of September (RSVP here)

Rules

  • You may use any pre-existing code or assets that you have the legal right to use, including purchased assets and code libraries. However, you may not start working on your game before the start the jam. This includes creating assets or code ahead of time you intend to use in the game jam. Please credit all external art and audio assets in your game's description.
  • You may not use generative AI to create any assets in your game, including art, audio and dialogue.
  • Your game must be safe for work.
  • Team sizes can be between 1-6 people.
  • Your game must be playable on at least Windows, but we recommend submitting builds for other platforms if you can so that everyone is able to play your game.
  • Your game can be created with any engine, as long as you can provide a standalone executable — games that require a third-party platform to run such as Roblox will not be accepted. You can, however, submit a full-conversion mod for a game if you have the right to redistribute that game (this usually means it is an open source game). For example, you may submit an iwad (datapack) for GZDoom as long as it does not depend on any other wad files. If you do this, make sure to provide instructions on how to download the game and run your mod; consider also uploading the game's binaries to your submission page. Always check that you are following the game's license and give credit/attribution as required.
  • You may not hire a freelancer to work on your game for you. You can however, get others to help you in-person or online.
