What is it & How can I Enter?

The Twist Jam is an annual game jam running for 72 hours where you not only have to comply with a given theme, there is also a twist to change up the development/gameplay experience. You can join the jam by clicking the 'Join Jam' button above, doing so will mean you will recieve an email at the start of the jam containing the twist and the theme.

Who can enter?

The jam is open to everyone. It doesn't matter whether you're a professional game designer or someone who's just learned coding. Even if you don't know any programming languages or frameworks you can still participate (see the section below).

What is the theme?

The theme for this year is: broken. The theme is meant to be less of a restriction and more of a starting point for idea generation.

What is the twist?

The twist is what sets this game jam apart from others. It's an additional rule that is revealed at the last minute to change the development / gameplay experience.

The twist for this year is No more than 3 colours may be used.

(NOTE: a colour is considered to be a distinct RGB value)

Who judges the games and when?

Anyone can rate games. Game ratings are open for exactly one week following the closing of submissions.

When are submissions available to play?

The submissions page becomes available at the same time submissions close. Even if a game is submitted long in advance of the deadline, it will only be shown in the submissions page after the deadline. This is done to prevent early submissions getting an unfair advantage when it comes to rating.

Can I make changes after I have submitted my game?

You can make changes to your uploaded files up until the deadline, at which time file uploads will no longer be available. You can however, continue to make any changes to your game's page even after the deadline.

How many people can be in a single team?

Each team can consist of any amount of members though it is recommended to keep the number small so it's not to much trouble to organise the team. Keep in mind, this doesn't mean that you have to work in teams. Some of the most succesful jam games have been made by a single person.

What assets can I use?

You are free to use any third party or pre-made assets provided you have the legal right to use them.

What categories will my game be judged on?

The games will all be rated under the folliwing categories:

Creativity - How creative were the developers in their interpretation of the theme / adapting to the twist

Polish - How polished were the games. If you encountered any bugs, mark the game down in this category.

Design - The quality of the game design. Take into account: Level design / gameplay (if relevent), and how much fun you had while playing,

Presentation - How well was the game presented. Take into account: graphics and audio, visual effects, and the game's page.

Mods choice - Games chosen by the mods to be showcased. (Note: the ranking for this category is decided completely by the mods of the jam, it will not appear as a ranking category to be ranked by the participants)

The score used to determine your final ranking in the results will be an average of the scores in the four categories listed above (apart from mods choice).

What tools can I use?

You can use any publicly available tools, paid or free.

I want to participate but don't know how to code.

There are many different game engines nowadays that require little to no coding at all. One of which is Construct which is visual scripting, with no programming languages required.

When will the results become available?

Results will become available one hour after ratings close. You can view the ranking of games in the 'results' tab and view your own games results on your submission page.
