Welcome, Raven!

This is a game jam organised by the Portugal Discord server. If you see this, do not submit unless you're part of the community.

There's no theme, but here's some ideas.

  • Game that's basically the intermission sections in Armored Core or Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere
  • A King's Field clone using Sword of Moonlight with a funny twist: it only has dialogue
  • A quirky RPG Maker game about depression that's actually optimistic (has music stolen from Sewerslvt and Machine Girl)
  • A HyperCard stack made on a classic Macintosh emulator
  • Literally anything with a cute girl

Little reminders:

  • Anything is a game as long as there's rules to the interaction. Don't be afraid of getting experimental if you can't do more complex gameplay. Limitation is the mother of invention.
  • I've found that I can do A LOT during five hour sprints in the morning. If you have the privilege of being a NEET or you're on vacation, I highly recommend doing this. Otherwise, make sure to get a lot of sleep and be smart about work. If you're stuck on a single task, simplify it or get rid of it. Don't swallow more than you can chew.
  • Plan and prototype your game using non-complicated software. What do I mean by this? Well, even if you don't use it for the final game, tools like Twine and Renpy are perfect to visualize and prototype more than just dialogue stuff. Wanna test logic before putting the game together to see if it's fun? Use Twine/Renpy. Making a game with Unity but the environment is taking longer than expected? Do the map in RPG Maker first and then replicate it in Unity once you nail the right flow.
  • Related to the above: Test early, test often. If you keep it simple at prototyping stage (like using simpler tools before going big on the big engine) you'll have a great time actually putting together the game.
  • Don't underestimate paper. If it's fun in analog form, it will be fun in digital form.
  • Work smart, not hard. Planning is everything. Have a simple, singular goal in mind and figure out logical ways to get there. This is not to say to stick to the plan; but to have a rough roadmap that you can later disobey. Feeling lost is the worst, so as long as you have a mental map for yourself the rest will fall into place. It matters very little if you end up with something completely different.
  • Don't think... FEEL! is a good thing, but use the above to find the FEEL. Not everyone can do shit from thin air. A little push is always useful.

Good luck!
