Hex crawls are a style of tabletop RPG adventure where players explore a map divided into hexagonal sections, with each hex containing potential encounters, locations, or mysteries. Think of it as sandbox exploration with structure!
Create a hex crawl adventure, system, or tool that captures the spirit of exploration and discovery. Whether you're designing a mysterious wilderness, a sprawling city district, or an alien landscape - show us what lies beyond the next hex!
What Counts:
- Complete hex crawl adventures (any system or system-neutral)
- Hex crawl generators or tools (random tables, procedures, etc.)
- Mini-systems focused on hex crawl mechanics
- Supplementary content (new monsters, hazards, or mechanics for existing hex crawls)
- Visual aids (maps, hex templates, reference sheets)
- PDF, text document, or interactive tool
- Free or pay-what-you-want pricing during jam period
- Include "Hex Crawl Jam" in your title or description
- 1-2 paragraph description of what makes your hex crawl unique
- Abandoned Places: What was left behind and why?
- Living Landscapes: Hexes that change based on player actions
- Microscopic Worlds: Hex crawls in unexpected small spaces
- Community Connections: How settlements and NPCs link across hexes
- Temporal Shifts: Different time periods in different hexes
This jam is about learning and sharing, not just competition. We encourage:
- First-time creators - never made a hex crawl? Perfect time to start!
- Iteration and feedback - share work-in-progress posts
- Collaborative spirit - comment on and support other submissions
- Knowledge sharing - what hex crawl techniques did you discover?
- Check out classic hex crawls like "The Isle of Dread" or "Hot Springs Island"
- Explore tools like Hex Kit or hand-drawn mapping
- Consider different scales: region, city district, building floor plans
- Think about what makes exploration meaningful in your setting
Quick Scout (under 1,000 words): Individual hexes, encounter tables, navigation tools, one page crawls, and whatever fits!
Full Expedition (1,000-5,000 words): Complete wilderness regions, exploration campaigns, and/or dope crawls!
Cartographer's Kit (over 5,000 words): Hex crawl mechanics, mapping systems, survival rules, & whatever else fits in crawls!
