Update: The optional theme for this year's jam is "Out of Control". You can choose to interpret the theme in any way you like.
This is a relaxed, beginner-friendly jam with the goal of making short, simple minigames.
Think small. Your game should be playable, from start-to-finish, in 20 seconds or less. It’s up to you if you want the player to reach a goal within the time-limit, race to score as many points as possible before the clock runs down, or complete a fixed-length, scripted level.
Think of the game of your dreams you'd like to build, then think of a 20 second slice of that game that sets your game apart from others.
All games must be made using DragonRuby Game Toolkit. DragonRuby will be free to download at https://dragonruby.itch.io/dragonruby-gtk until one week before the end of the jam (duration 3 weeks).
This is a non-competitive jam. No prizes will be awarded and there will be no judges or ratings. You may submit as many games as you like.
An optional theme will be announced shortly before the start of the jam.
The jam runs for 3 weeks with an extra weekend thrown in for good measure.
DragonRuby is a 2D game engine that’s super easy to get to grips with but powerful enough to make professional strength games. It uses the Ruby programming language and it can build games for Windows, Mac, Linux, consoles and phones!
Q: What if my game is longer than 20 seconds?
A: Your game is welcome even if it’s not under 20 seconds. This is a casual jam, so there are no torches or pitchforks here.
Q: Why 20 Seconds?
A: The first twenty seconds of any game are the most important. That is the average amount of time you have to capture the player and pull them into the game.
Q: Can I work with a team?
A: Yes!
Q: I don't like coding but I'm good with graphics, sound, writing or some other valuable skill. Can I join?
A: Absolutely. Come to the Discord and ask if anyone wants to team up. The same goes for coders who want to team up with other creative types.
Q: Can I start working on my game before the jam starts?
A: Yes!
Q: What if I've never made a game before?
A: This is a beginner-friendly jam. The sample game is designed to be used as an easy starting point for everyone, regardless of their experience.
Q: Can I submit an unfinished game?
A: If you didn’t manage to do everything you wanted by the end of the jam and your game is somewhat playable, yes, please do submit it. If you do submit an unfinished game, please do it near the end of the jam. Please do not submit non-functional games.
This jam is organised by members of the DragonRuby community.
