Theme

This gamejam’s theme is ‘Colour Changes Everything’ whatever that means to you. It’s a pretty loose theme and that’s purpose is to not particularly limit you but to make you think about how that might integrate design wise, programming wise and/or art wise into your games.

This theme could influence the design aspect by making it so that when your character is super charged the world turns colourful, it might mean that only with colour glasses can you see certain elements or maybe you could design a level in such a way so that colour teaches the player mechanics without a tutorial!

The theme from a programming perspective sparks questions such as how exactly might you switch between the two colours if they are 2D tiles - should it be a delegate, static function, run on a separate thread. If the game is 3D and you’re switching between them then it sparks ideas of how to handle shaders, what type of shader is to be used without colour and how to send that out to all the elements. These are base ideas though, if the design implemented say a beam of light in particular colours then you could in theory think about how to implement these with shaders and different changing colours / intensities.

From an art perspective there clearly is a lot to say about this theme as Colour is a key element of the overall art style. Considerations here include what the overall look of the world would be without colour, what does the colour look like and what does it say to the user. If the colours are speaking to the player then how are they speaking to the player, for instance a red colour might be telling them to stop, green go however you might also want to flip the tables and go in the opposite direction. How you want to show the world before Colour has changed everything is important too, is the difference enough between the two colours, do you also want to change the art styles? Are you highlighting the correct elements to give the correct impression?

Games are everything when it comes to media and sound is included in that. You might also want to consider how music and sound effects come into the Colour changes everything theme. When the player figures something out, or if there is an outright ‘turbo mode’ with colours, the music might ramp up or the sound effect might become more embellished. If the elements on your screen are quite miserable it would feel quite jarring to have really happy music, so think about what soundtrack you’re going to have!

Rules

These rules are very similar to the Ludum Dare Rules: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/rules and will reference them.

  1. **Anyone may enter the event** but please do not post the invite link to social media / publicly. We’d like to at least keep this to friends of friends or people on servers from this server. If unsure if you should post a link message Lord Bones.
  2. You may work alone or in team sizes up to 3. If you go over 3 you’ll still be accepted but this will be taken into account in the judging.
  3. You’re free to use any tools or libraries to create your game. You’re free to start with any base-code you may have. Just tag as appropriate.
  4. You’re free to use 3rd party Artwork/Music/Audio assets, or assets you previously created, but you **must tag your submission appropriately**. The tags are for work you contributed to and are found in #submission-details. This ensures that the judges know what you actually contributed to.
  5. Only use assets that you have the legal right to use (Public Domain, things you licensed/created, etc). If you don’t have the right to use something, it is your responsibility.
