When you finished reading Of Mice and Men, did you think, "wow, that book was really sad," or did you think, "I wish there was a weird video game loosely based off of that"? Every time you watch the Big Bang Theory, are you thinking about what else you could be doing, or a hypothetical JRPG staring Sheldon Cooper? If you hear Macklemore's Thrift Shop in the club, is your first thought to dance, or to make it into a strange real-time strategy game?

If you've sided more with the latter answers, congratulations, this game jam is for you! In the Strange Adaptation Jam, you'll take a beloved (or infamous) work and adapt it into a questionable tie-in video game. Whether it's a book, movie, TV show, poem, song, play, musical, painting, board game, or a brand, if it captures the spirit of the original work, you're doing it wrong.

Your adaptations will be ranked with the following criteria:

  1. Concept - How ridiculous of an adaptation is it? The more disconnected it is from the original work, the better
  2. Execution - Did the concept live up to your expectations?
  3. Gameplay - Are you enjoying playing it?
  4. Aesthetics - Not only the art, but also the music/sound. Or, if it's text-only, then I guess how nice the fonts are?

Rules:

  • You are allowed to work in teams, or work alone.
  • Avoid racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, xenophobic, anti-semetic, or any sort of discriminatory theme in your game, even if it's a central part of your work. (Yes, you can adapt Huckleberry Finn, but no, you do not need to say the n-word 216 times for it to be a "true adaptation")
  • Try to make your games safe for work. It's okay if there's a little gore, or the occasional swear, but don't go over the top with the violence or nudity.
  • You're allowed to use pre-made assets.
  • And, if you want, you can use assets from whatever you're adapting, such as lines from a book or audio clips from a TV show. Though, this may be better if you're adapting things in public domain, so you couldn't hypothetically get sued. Your call, honestly.
  • Feel free to start planning before the jam. There is no secret theme to be revealed when the jam starts, so you don't need to worry about that!
