Welcome to our game jam! We'll be working from Tuesday, March 18th through Thursday, May 1st.  Below you'll find  the theme, rules and quick tips on getting started.

Theme & Extras

Incorporating one or both themes is OPTIONAL. The games who include it will be judged for theme incorporation as well.

Abstract Theme: Mystery

Specific Theme: Villains Becoming Heroes

The Rules

  1. You should have at least 10 minutes of play time.
  2. You must include at least four items from your design documents (textual artifacts, locations, etc).
  3. Game Engines:
    1. You may use  Twine
      1. You may use Harlowe or SugarCube as your story format.
    2. You may use RPG Playground
    3. You may use Tyranobuilder (in UX Media Lab/Dr. M can bring one laptop)
    4. You may use Bitsy
    5. You may use Bloxels ($)
  4. You may use assets (images, sounds, etc.) that you've created, come with the software, those from itch.io, or those on Picrew or Open Game Art only.
    1. You must give attribution according to the original artists’ guidelines.
    2. You must attribute the art to a specific artist or Picrew developer, this means no AI.
  5. Your title page options should include the game's rating and content warnings, as well as "Start" and "Credits" options.
  6. Credit all art or assets you've used from Open Game Art based on the creators listed guidelines.  This can be found on the asset’s page under Copyright/Attribution Notice. Same with Picrew.
    1. Picrew's attributions are explained  on a popup window when you open the character creator. Then the specific attribution requirements are on the character creator itself.
  7. Bitsy, Tyrano, and Twine games should be uploaded to Itch.io. RPG Playground and Bloxels games will have their own game page on that site.

Getting Started & Tips

  1. Get an itch.io account
  2. Sign up for the game jam here
  3. Brainstorm your game
  4. Give your game a working title. You can change it before you turn it in, but by the end of the jam it should have a title
    1. A good title - not "Mystery Game" :)
  5. After each session, download your game as an HTML file so you'll have a backup.
    1. Add the backup to your chosen cloud server as well.
    2. RPG Playground is cloud-based without an export option. I HIGHLY recommend taking screenshots and keeping your change log or sprint board up to date with every session.
    3. Add these to our course dropbox as a backup.

  • Best in Category (RPG, Bitsy, Twine, Vis. Novel)
