Note: This is a jam for a school assignment, but feel free to join the jam even if you're not part of the course :)

Something Old. Something New. Something Borrowed. Something Blue.

This game jam is all about trying something new. You'll learn something that you've always wanted to learn. You won't master the new thing, but you'll learn a lot about it. More details below:

Something Old (20%)

Each team member must include something they know. Whether it's animation, 3D modeling, image editing, audio design, etc. Each student must be able to name something they added to the game that applies to this category, and they must also show where this skill is represented in their LinkedIn page (perhaps under "skills", their headline, or in the body of their Summary).

Something New (70%)

This is the meat of the game jam: Each team member must learn something NEW! This could be anything such as 3D modeling, AI, animation, economy design, Niagara, combat, etc. Plan on spending at least 10 hours outside of class during the two week jam on this alone.

Assessment for "Something New" will be based on whether this new "something" answers meaningful questions for you.

  • For instance, if I wanted to prototype adding animated cool customized weapons to my game, I would prototype a very simple gun in Blender, animate it in Blender, and then figure out how to attach it to the player character in UE.
  • My "Something New" in this case is essentially a prototype that answers the question of, what is the hypothetical pipeline for this kind of feature, and how much time needs to be spent in each software.
  • Even if I did an imperfect job in the modeling, animation, and implementation in UE, I could develop some answers:
    • A1: I may have only spent 2 hours modeling a gun in Blender, and it's not really perfect, but it does have some animated components - I now know that it would take at least 8 hours to model a half-decent gun in Blender.
    • A2: I may have only spent 2 hours poorly animating in Blender, but I do have a working animation, and I now know that it will likely take another 8 hours to do some nice animation in Blender to animate a weapon (depending on # of animated components).
    • A3: I spent the bulk of my time figuring out how to attach the gun to the actual player character, and I now know that it should take MUCH less time than that, it should likely just take an hour to set up next time. I would describe the solution in a submission to Blackboard.

Something Borrowed (5%)

Ah okay so in keeping with the theme, each team member is required to reference a game OR entertainment medium of their choice.  It doesn't have to be much, but there must be some sort of homage somewhere.

Each team member MUST make their own "borrowed" additions to the game.

Something Blue (5%)

Honestly, I really wanted this pun for the "something new" but I suppose we have to go all out. Everyone's color scheme is blue. You must use BLUE. BLUEEEEEEEEE (Please use other colors, but the hero color for this jam is Blue)

Each team member MUST make their own BLUE additions to the game.

Other rules and constraints:

Game must have working "enemies" of some kind. (no enemies = - 5% overall for everyone)

Game must have "combat" of some kind. ( no combat = -5% overall for everyone)
