In collaboration with Cubix, I have the honor to host and welcome you to SNext Jam 2023: Birthday Bash!

Celebrate this year's anniversary of the SNext open-source system in this year's SNext Jam. If you think you're proficient in environments like Scratch, then now's the time to strut your stuff. Test your dev prowess by making a game in under 26 days, that's plenty of time right? The theme for this time around is cards, play your favorite card game or invent one yourself. Take inspiration and channel it into your own personal masterpiece of card playing mayhem. Your game will be voted for by the community in 4 categories, Visuals, Audio, Gameplay, and the BROWNIE POINTS criteria listed below.

Here's the rules:

  1. Your game must be made with SNedit, a screen shot of your entry in the editor or the game's project file works as proof if you want to.
  2. It needs to playable in-browser, meaning that you need to build for HTML5. If you want to compile to other platforms on top of html you're more than welcome to.
  3. It needs to follow and be based around the jam's theme. So long as it is based around cards for a core mechanic, you're god.
  4. Your game MUST be playable. It can't just be something like all cut scenes with no actual gameplay.
  5. You must, and I mean MUST have fun! The entire point of this jam is to be something fun to participate in while sharpening your skills as a developer and maybe getting some bragging rights.
  6. BROWNIE POINTS: If you're feeling really daring, make it fully original. No recycled assets from other card based games. It's not necessary and it might not even change how people vote for your game, but it's a fun challenge none the less.

If you need some some inspiration, some examples could be games like Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories/Re: Chain of Memories, Pokémon: Online TCG, and Exploding Kittens.

When voting, vote for the category you think they do best in. Looks pretty? Vote 'Visuals'. Banger of a soundtrack? Vote 'Audio'. Best gameplay? Ok that one's just self explanatory. If the entry doesn't follow the theme or breaks the rules, vote 'Doesn't Fit' so that we can review it after the voting stage.

Category winners will get crowns depending on which category they had the most votes in. The devs of said crowned projects will also receive a special role in the Cubix Discord server.

The crowns are as follows:

  • Gold CrownThe overall winner of the jam, having the most total votes.
  • Runner-Up Crown: Awarded to the entries with the 2nd and 3rd most votes.
  • Shiny Crown: Awarded to the entry with the most votes in the Visuals category
  • Controller Crown: Awarded to the entry with the most votes in the Gameplay category
  • Sound Wave Crown: Awarded to the entry with the most votes in the Audio category
  • BROWNIE CROWNIE: The crown obtained by getting the most BROWNIE POINTS (most votes in the BROWNIE POINTS category)
  • Host's Pick: A special award given to the award that the host (me) feels is their favorite

Entries and devs can only be awarded one crown per jam. You'll receive the crown that you have the most votes in compared to the other categories. EX: You have 20 votes in Visuals and 30 in Gameplay and you won both categories, you would receive the Controller Crown and the Shiny Crown would go to that category's runner-up.

When submitting, please list the Discord handles of everyone who worked on the project. This allows us to give the proper roles to crown winners. We also ask that you try to keep your team relatively small, so that we're not giving Golden Crowns to, like, 15 different people... ok that's really exaggerating but you get the point.

Final note, please be a good sport and not actively insult or attempt to sabotage other entries. Any report of foul sportsmanship on either Discord or the jam community tab will result in your entry being disqualified. The same goes to copying, if you're recognized as a copycat, your entry may also be disqualified. Note that it is if it's a deliberate copy, if you just so happen to be one of the 5 people that recreated solitaire, first off you might want to pick another game, but you should be fine.

Good luck, have fun, and if you're looking for a team, check out the Cubix Discord server.
