Welcome to the SGB Halloween 2020 Game Jam

It's that time of year again! Monsters lurk around every corner, ghosts haunt the living and all things creepy come out to play!

Halloween began as the Celtic festival of Samhain, where the veils between our world and the Otherworld thinned. This allowed all manner of creatures - from mischievous imps to malevolent spirits - the freedom to roam the Earth. It also marked the end of Summer and the beginning of Winter.

Join the SGBH2020 Game Jam - if you dare!

Dates

The SGBH2020 Game Jam runs from 1 October, 2020 to 31 October, 2020 at midnight GMT (4pm Pacific/6pm Central/7pm Eastern).

Rules

  • The theme must be related to horror or Halloween and submissions must be games only.
  • Games must be created with SMILE GAME BUILDER. Using Unity is fine as long as the game is created in SGB and post-processed through Unity.
  • Submissions must be original games created for the game jam itself (but read the F.A.Q. section).
  • You can use any assets or assets packs in your game. However, make sure you have permission to use them (check any third party terms of use).
  • Mature content - such as scary or disturbing content - is allowed, but bear in mind that some players might be sensitive to such content. Make sure you flag your game in the description.

Prizes

Prizes for the SGBH2020 Game Jam are:

Prizes Include
  • Shadow Fear & DLC (AmalgamAsh)
  • Up to $50 worth of SGB DLCs - your choice (Companion Wulf)

¶ These are preliminary prizes and are subject to change. The prize amount has been increased (thanks to sponsorship), so nearer the time winners will be decided and prizes awarded.

Amalgamash and I (Companion Wulf) will play through each submission throughout November, including videos on YouTube, and will decide on the winners. Prizes will be delivered in December.

SGB Discord

You can join the SGB Discord server, where there is a dedicated channel to share your progress, submit screenshots, or chat about the SGBH2020 Game Jam in general.

Also, if you have any questions about the game jam itself, you can in the #sgbh2020-jam channel.

F.A.Q.

Does my game need to be just horror?

No. Horror is a loose theme, anything from murder mystery to Lovecraftian lore. How you interpret the genre is up to you. However, in the spirit of Halloween, there must be something related to Halloween and/or the horror genre as a whole. As far as a theme or storyline, that's up to your imagination.

Can I submit unpublished games?

Yes, although it's preferable new games created for the SGBH2020 Game Jam are submitted. If a game hasn't been published anywhere else or submitted to any other game jams, you can submit the game to the jam.

Can I submit Halloween assets, resources or recolors?

No. This game jam is for games created in SGB only.

Does my game have to be completed?

No. Games can be demo versions, proof-of-concept games or unfinished. Of course, if you _do_ manage to complete a game within the time, you are awesome!

Copyrights

  • Make sure you don't use copyrighted materials or, if you do, make sure you have permission to use them. Third party assets packs usually have their own terms of use.
  • You retain all copyrights to your game. Submissions to the SGBH2020 Game Jam immutably remain your property.
  • Be sure to give credit for using any non-default assets. It may not be required, but it is a nice gesture.

Happy Game Jam Creating!

We will look forward to seeing what kinds of games you guys submit and will play through them after the game jam is over. No doubt Amalgamash will also do some "Let's Plays" on his YouTube channel ('course he will!).
