AND THE PROMPT IS:
The Advance of it, living on a borrowed handful of it, recounting it, traveling through it, and spending it wisely. There are fewer prompts more open to interpretation than "Time". This especially opens up the possibility of novel concepts such as timeline hopping, rewinding, or skipping ahead, or choosing how to invest it wisely. There are possibilities from here to the end of, well, TIME!
The Skulzy Spook-tacular Game Jam is a fun exercise in game design centered on cards as a play medium. This can be a physical game played with actual people, or a digital game played with a program like Tabletop Simulator, but ideally can be played physically anyway. This is a Jam based on Tabletop gaming, but those who like to craft video games are welcome to join in, as well!
Unless additional sponsors appear, the prize is Bragging Rights and a chance to be covered on Kohdok's Youtube channel as the results are revealed! Such an honor!
Winners are judged on Best Presentation, best Use of the Prompt, Most Novel Design, and of course Director's Choice!
And now there's prizes!
For this Jam, I have been sent some free tickets to PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Any Jammer who submits their game within the deadline, and opts-in on the submission page, can be entered to win one of five 3-day passes to the show coming this December!
Drawing will be random and will take place after judging.
On October 1st at 4:00PM EST, the Jam's Prompt will be revealed. Once that happens, Jammers will have ONE WEEK to create, craft, test, and submit their game for judging, entries closing at Midnight EST, October 8th. The Judging process will take 1 week, during which time, Jammers can spruce-up their visual design and finish their artwork for when the submissions go public.
All entries MUST comply with the following criteria:
It MUST use Card Play as a central mechanic, akin to a TCG or Deckbuilder.
It CANNOT have subject matter in excess of a "PG-13" Rating. Use common sense.
It CANNOT make use of Generative or Derivative AI, nor use any products of said program. No ChatGPT, no Midjourney, none of it.
That said, this is meant to be a fun jam! So feel free to take it easy and read between the lines!
Team up! Work together with other designers, programmers, artists and others to get experience and have fun!
Just because I said it must support two players doesn't exclude a computer opponent as one of the players.
Nor does this mean the players are competing against each other. Co-op card games are a thing.
The month of warning is to allow you to learn new tools, find teams, and line up schedules. You are allowed to chat with teammates, or prepare basic components like card templates or TTS tables in advance of the prompt dropping, just don't do any actual game design for the jam before that.
I mean it when I said you can use the Week of Judging to finish your artwork! Your rules and card text are locked-in once the week is up, but by all means polish that artwork! Seems like a fair trade for barring the use of ai.
That said, Stock Assets, such as the textures found in Clip Studio Paint, ARE permitted for visual design. Gen ai really is the hard line.
The submission criteria is going to be bare-bones. If you want to explain your game or how it works with the Prompt, please include that in your Rulebook.
Join our Discord! Whether as a Jammer, A collaborator, or even just a Spectator open to being used to playtest! Includes channels and voice-chat!
TTS Deck Builder Guide: A TTS Deckbuilder comes with Tabletop Simulator, but other tools exist to prepare a game for TTS even if you lack the program.
Any Game you submit to this Game Jam is your property. Kohdok's Game Reviews claims no ownership over your creations.
Any Game you submit to this Game Jam may show up in a Kohdok's Game Reviews video without your permission.
