[JAM RESULTS: thanks for the amazing entries! Here's who won:
1st place: Scrappy's Fastball Frenzy (great mini-game collection!)
2nd-5th place: Base Ballin' With Scrappy (physics-y roguelite ball-hittin'!), Super Scrappy Golf Day (2D mini-golf madness!), Scrappy In : Attack Of The Vengeful Raccoons! (save the bleachers in a raccoon rumble!), Scrappy's Way Home (super-fun platformer!)
The winners and select other entries will be featured on the big screen at the Ballers game on June 1st, and in the GameDiscoverCo newsletter shortly afterwards. Scrappy, the Ballers and GameDiscoverCo thanks everyone for their great entries!]
GameDiscoverCo and the Oakland Ballers baseball team are proud to present the Scrappy Game Jam! Your task, should you choose to accept it? Make a fun, short video game - in any genre and game engine you like - starring the Ballers mascot Scrappy the Rally Possum for this 10-day game jam.
Prizes?
1st place - $500 USD and a lifetime subscription to the GameDiscoverCo Plus newsletter & data service.
2nd-5th place: Lifetime subscriptions to GameDiscoverCo Plus.
(Top games may also be shown on the big screen at a Ballers game & promoted to fans at our co-sponsored Scrappy's Birthday game on June 1st.)
Background?
The Oakland Ballers are an independent minor league baseball team based in Northern California, where we at video game discovery newsletter GameDiscoverCo also live. Because we're local, we decided to support our community by sponsoring the team this year! (Yes, we have an outfield sign and everything.)
We thought the B's mascot Scrappy The Rally Possum - created by Pixar & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures artist Ken Mitchroney and inspired by the Oakland A’s on-field interloper in 2014 - is perfect ‘game jam’ fodder. This is meant to be a lighthearted mini-jam, so go wild, and let's see what you come up with.
Rules?
- You can have a downloadable version too, but all submissions must be playable in browser. (Reminder: even engines like Unity allow you to do this fairly easily!)
- Use only assets you own/have made (or the Scrappy assets we provide below!)
- Entries will be voted on by the GameDiscoverCo staff.
- We're looking for short, family-friendly games with interesting ideas in them, but whatever genre you want to make is good with us!
- Other 'normal' game jam rules apply: no pre-made games, give proper credits in-game, don't use other people's assets or work without permission.
Questions?
Feel free to hit us up at contact@gamediscover.co if you have any questions about this jam.
BONUS: extra assets?
Scrappy creator Ken Mitchroney made a side-on and top-down view of Scrappy (below) to help with your visualization - here's a Google Drive link if you want to use them as reference - or even use them directly:
In conclusion: good luck, everyone, and Go Ballers! (Bonus: here's the full Ken Mitchroney illustration he did for the Jam...)
