Hello again, creators - we're back from a hiatus and ready to jam!
RPGs like Final Fantasy, Earthbound and Chrono Trigger have stood the test of time. With sprawling worlds, unique characters and epic tales of world-ending cataclysm, this genre has always opened up so many possibilities for fantastic story-telling and intuitive gameplay. Many games have also borrowed from this genre, resulting in a vast catalogue of games that incorporate RPG elements and make them a core part of the game.
The RPGM14 Concept Jam is intended for jammers to brainstorm ideas, create concepts and build the framework for the game they will be working on during the main jam (RPG Mania XIV). As RPG Mania is fluid between iterations, jammers can also choose to work on a jam game they've previously been working on for RPG Mania, in order to incorporate new mechanics, further develop their ideas and work toward a more polished result.
Rules:
- There is no voting period for the concept jam, as it is merely a precursor to the main jam. With that said, jammers are encouraged to post their progress in Discord to get feedback from the community.
- Any jam submissions intended for RPG Mania XIII must be done specifically for RPG Mania, but are fluent between iterations (in other words, if you submitted an entry for RPG Mania XIII or any previous RPG Mania, you can continue to work on and submit it for RPG Mania XIV, etc.) If your entry is submitted to a different jam, it will be disqualified. However, you can use any assets you have available to you as long as you have the rights and/or licensing to use them. In the case of fangames, you can use whatever assets fit your project, though you do so at your own discretion.
- Submission rules for what qualifies as an RPG are very lax in this jam, in order to encourage creativity and outside-the-box thinking - as long as you incorporate RPG elements in some form (narrative or gameplay based), you're good! Just please be sure to adhere to the previous rule as that one is more strictly enforced (mainly to prevent spam entries and encourage community engagement)
- Jam games can be created in any game engine you have at your disposal (Unity, Unreal, Godot, RPG Maker etc.) or without the use of an engine, and the style can be whatever you choose, be it 2D, pixel art, 3D - the world is yours to design!
- Spamming the Discord server will result in an immediate ban from the server
Don't forget to vote for your preferred theme! The winning theme will be revealed closer to the start of the jam.
Happy jamming everyone!
