The Robot Party Game Jam is an annual jam in which the internet's most gifted and reckless community creates a wide array of strange & unique games that adhere to a strangely specific theme and ruleset. The featured characters were generated from the random suggestions of a live Twitch audience. Here is the result:

THE THEME:

There once was a children’s game in the mid-2000s called Skremplets, which featured random collectible miniatures that came packaged with elaborate and cost-ineffective holographic stat cards. The eponymous Skremplets were a colorful assortment of little gross creatures, united only in their love for three things: trash, garbage, and rules. While kids generally liked the character designs, almost no one could figure out how to play the game. This ultimately brought about a quick collapse for the franchise.

Allegedly there were over 61 Skremplets, but these were the 8 most popular:

YOUR MISSION:

The Skremplets license has been fully acquired at great expense by a multinational environmental agency, The Earth Hands Council. They would like you to make a video game with a nature-positive message featuring the least environmentally-conscious creatures of all time, Skremplets.

However, The Earth Hands Council doesn’t want any of this production to be traced back to them, because that would make the video game inherently “uncool.” (They’ve had bad experiences with this in the past) The positive environmental message must be disguised in what appears to be a regular, cool, modern Skremplets video game. (i.e. the game shouldn’t explicitly be about cleaning oil spills, but cleaning an oil spill might casually benefit the player. Metaphors and allegories are also perfectly acceptable)

RULES:

  • Any kind of game is accepted, though it must be playable on Windows without additional software or run in a web browser
  • The game should not take longer than 25 minutes to finish
  • Do not use any unlicensed material. Credit when necessary.
  • Do not use generative AI for any asset, text, or code
  • All games are subject to Twitch Community Guidelines

PARAMETERS: (These are the in-universe rules, requested by “The Earth Hands Council”)

  •  Before the game begins, there must be a menu that forces the player to confirm that Skremplets are back.
  • You may feature as many Skremplets as you’d like, pictured here or imagined otherwise. And you can change their appearance in any way you see fit. However, at some point in the game, one of the Top 8 Skremplets must:
    1. Learn an eco-friendly lesson
    2. Say, “Shucks, I renounce my ways.”
    3. Shed their Goblic Endowment
  • There must be an interactive element that demonstrates how much a Skremplet doesn’t care about rules or stat sheets anymore.
  • The game must feature a hidden collectible called “DSD’s Evening Sweater”. Preferably handmade, faintly yellow, chilling aura. Any effects of this item must be permanent.
  • The beloved and morally-uncompromising environmental education figure Boyhowdy the Atlantic Puffin must be thoroughly mocked or disrespectfully depicted in your game. (This is something Earth Hands would absolutely never do.) Traditionally, Boyhowdy looks like this:

JUDGING & DEADLINES:

There will be open judging on itch.io. The judges will grade games in four categories with a score from 1-5. The categories are:

- Skremplet Revival - Rating, whether it was one or many Skremplets utilized, the level to which the brand feels alive. Points are rewarded for unique or engaging game world/characters.
- Covert Environmentalism - Rating the effectiveness of the hidden planet-friendly message, as well as Boyhowdy the Atlantic Puffin’s negative presentation. Points are rewarded for clever/unique methods for educational stealth.
- Sticking to the Rules - Rating how well the game abides by both the Rules and Parameters. 5 stars represents all Parameters met and zero Rules broken.
- Actually Fun - Rating how much fun is at the heart of this game. Points are rewarded for game design and mechanics.

The deadline to submit the completed games is Wednesday, September 24th. Judging opens at this point.
Each entrant will be streamed live Friday, September 26th and Saturday, September 27th on twitch.tv/KyleBosman

Judging will close Friday, October 3rd.
The winning Robot Party Jam entry will receive the sole distinction of being recognized as official canon.

In addition to the Robot Party Jam Winner, the community will also be voting on extra Robot Party Jam awards. The categories will be:

Outstanding Original Music
Phenomenal Game Mechanic
Extraordinary Narrative
Supreme Visuals
Breakout Character Design
Best Unaddressed Elephant in the Room (The Random Bonus Chat Category)

The winner of the Robot Party Jam and all awards will be announced live on Saturday, October 4th.
