You ever wanted to make a game that has some rhythm elements to it? Well... this might be the perfect time to do so! Unleash the beat in the 2024 editition of Rhythm Jam! Spend 10 days making a game with rhythm elements - anything from a fully fledged mania game to an audio synced dancing deckbuilder.
For the duration of the jam Arcy is making his Rhythm Engine asset free to use! Rhythm Engine is a high level audio sync asset for Unity, optimized for rapid prototyping and ease of use.
The top three games in the "Overall" category will get a Unity Asset Store key for it.
You do not have to use Rhythm Engine, or Unity! Using Rhythm Engine is entirely optional, but it gives you a pretty solid head start when it comes to audio sync.
The winner in the "Overall" category will get a shiny role on our Discord server, too!
A rhythm game is a game that includes some aspects of rhythm. There are two main ways to use rhythm in games.
Player Rhythm is testing the players rhythm skills, this includes games such as Osu, Stepmania, Clone Hero, A Dance of Fire and Ice, etc.
Environmental Rhythm is the environment reacting to a songs rhythmic beat, this includes games such as Project Arrythmia, Just Shapes And Beats, No Straight Roads, Geometry Dash, etc
Yes! When it comes to assets you can use them as long as they follow these guidelines.
As for ideas, you are free to plan out your game before the jam starts.
Absolutely not. I created the asset, and it aligns perfectly with the jam's overall goal. I decided to offer it for free—that's it!
No, sorry!
The main reason for that is that this is a game jam, not a mod jam. We want our participants to make the majority of an original game during the time that is given, not just a map, some art and music for an existing game. Also this might go into legal issues, because you can't really just upload a game that you're modding alongside your mod, and if you upload just the mod, people won't be able to play it easily. So we want to avoid that.
The majority of your game should be made during the jam, premade assets are an exception to this and can be made before the jam starts.
You can start with these design lessons and tutorials to figure out what would make a fun rhythm game as well as how to implement it.

When using their music, please only limit to the tracks in the below google drive folder.
Additionally, you HAVE to credit the artists in both the game description on itch and in the game itself.
Lastly, these tracks are only available to the Rhythm Jam entries, not forever :)
Or you can use already existing music under the CC license.
There are 2 main places. You can ask on this server, on #๐ฏcurrent-jam, or you can go to the community tab on itch and ask there! There will be plenty of people willing to help! Lots of people are new to game jams here, and if you are one of them, there are lots of experiences jammers who can answer any doubts or questions related to participating in game jams in general!
