What is Renova?
Renova is a month-long game jam that challenges game developers to make visual novels from start to finish. This game jam is originally inspired by the well known game jam “NaNoRenO.”
Is there a prize or any sort of judging?
There is no prizes nor judging in Renova. This is only to improve your skills and to set a goal for yourself.
Is this a team thing, or am I supposed to do it alone?
You are allowed to do both. You can either seek out a team or do it solo.

Why should I participate?
It’s very hard for some of us to get stuff done without a time limit. This time limit is to motivate you to go beyond your limits and start, or to do what you love. It’s the same reason why people participate in game jams. It’s fun, and you get to know how to manage your time. If you had or have a visual novel idea lurking around, then now is your time to turn that idea into reality.
The most recent rules of Renova:
- Takes place the first Saturday of November
- You can only start making your game when Renova starts
- You are allowed to plan ahead
- Sketch poses, backgrounds, CGs is NOT allowed till Renova starts
- You are allowed to brainstorm character designs
- There are no prizes or winners here. Everyone who releases their game on Renova is a winner!
- You are allowed to release demos
I don’t know where to start!
If you don’t know how to start try looking up some YouTube videos or search for some ideas or visual novel softwares online. I recommend Ren’Py for people looking for softwares.
Where did the name come from?
The name “Renova” is based off of the visual novel engine “Ren’Py.” I basically mixed the words Ren’Py and Novel together. I know so creative! :P
