As summer turns to fall and the weather turns cooler, it is time to cast our minds inward. We all struggle with difficult emotions. Sometimes, it's because of our own personal struggles with these emotions threatening to reveal out darkest selves. Sometimes, it's the soup of traumatic experience we've had to swim in. Sometimes, it's just the ugliest parts of the world we see daily.

With this game jam I want to invite you to turn these feelings into a creative force. The challenge is to create a tabletop game that invites players to explore a difficult emotion of your choice. Here are some ideas:

  • Guilt
  • Grief
  • Anger
  • Greed
  • Hatred

Note: Games about forms of oppression (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc) are welcome so long as they are examinations of oppression. Games that express validation, celebration or "jokes" about these topics will be flagged as bigotry and instantly removed. This jam is a safe space to talk about the problems of the world and the entire spectrum of humanity is welcome.

Here are some other things to consider. These are not requirements, just options to help get you started.

  • Games that aren't one-shots. Being able to reflect on the fiction between sessions can be valuable.
  • Games that aren't solo or journaling. Sharing and finding points of commonality in a group can be bonding.
  • Games with a wide range of outcomes including uncomfortable ones. Stories don't always end justly.
  • Games with some mechanical complexity. Life is complicated and sometimes representing those complications is fruitful.
  • Games that require vulnerability. Sometimes putting a little of ourselves into our creations gives them added resonance.
  • Games that assume they will only be played with close, trusted friends. Putting aside cons, streams, meetups and other public facing games can bring us closer together in private spaces.

While this jam is unranked and entries will not be "judged" I will do my best to read each one and provide some feedback. This may take some time after the jam is finished. I look forward to seeing what everyone has to share.
