We're working on a big update to the ZineArranger layout program which adds options for 7 new tiny zine sizes! In celebration (and to help beta-test the new features), let's make some oddly-sized zines!

This is just a casual jam, running for about 4 weeks to give people plenty of time to make a zine (or more!).  There are no prizes or rankings, we're just making zines & sharing them!

  • What's a zine? - Zines are homemade booklets that can be about anything you want! People make fanzines for music, shows, & stories they love, perzines about their own experiences, art zines, comics, political zines, and zines that defy all classification!
  • What do you mean 'odd sized'? - Many zines are either half-size (a sheet of paper folded like a booklet), quarter size (four pages to a sheet), or minizines (eight pages to a sheet). But there are many other ways to fold and cut a zine--accordion style, 1/16th micro-minis, tri-folds, and so on! You might also re-imagine some of the standard sizes, like having a half-size booklet that opens from the top like a calendar, or creating a very long & skinny minizine! Whatever feels like an odd or unusual size to you counts.
  • What's the Zine Arranger? Do I have to use it? - Zine Arranger is a web tool that takes a PDF file and arranges all the pages into a printable zine template. It's handy for zines you're making on the computer, so you won't have to flip pages around to get things to unfold properly! You don't have to use the Zine Arranger for this jam. But if you would like to use it & help test out the new size options, you can find the beta version here: https://nashhigh.com/code/ZineArranger-1-1-Beta/
    • Note: Many of the new sizes haven't been tested yet! Sometimes pages might end up in the wrong order or upside-down, or the folding & cutting guides could be incorrect. Be sure to print a test copy before any expensive printing, and if you run into any problems, please let me know!
    • The new Zine Arranger sizes are: 1/12th, 1/16th, 1/24th, 1/32nd, 1/36th, 1/48th, and 1/64th. Each one supports double or single-sided, portrait/landscape, and top/side unfolding, so there are 56 new templates altogether!
  • How do I submit my zine? - This is up to you! To submit to the jam on itch.io, you'll need to create an itch project for your zine. When I make zines on the computer, I like to create a 'Digital Version' (just a PDF for reading on the computer) and a 'Printable Version' (another PDF, but laid out so that it can be printed & folded into the physical zine). You could also scan your zine or upload photos--however works best for you to share it!
