What do I win for my sweat and blood?

There are no prizes for this jam, sorry I teach for a living. Only the enjoyment creating something new, and the experience of challenging yourself to create a game within the parameters. Since space is limited you'll have to make every pixel count!

FAQ:

  • Is there a theme? NO
  • Can I work with a team: YES!
  • Can I submit more than one game: NO!
  • What language or tools can I use? Absolutely anything.
  • Are there restrictions on sound or music? NONE.
  • What existing assets can I use? While it's encouraged to create original assets for your game, you're welcome to use any assets you have the legal right to use, furthermore; it's always good to credit sources even if you don't have to!
  • Can I scale the screen/window? YES! As long as the game resolutions meets one of the criteria resolutions.
  • My game is for mobile, can I include controls outside the chosen resolution limit? YES! As long as they are just controls.
  • My game is for web, can I add border art outside the chosen resolution limit? YES! As long as it's part of the page and not rendered by the game.
  • Can my game change between resolutions? Sorry no. So be sure pick one you love!
  • Can I have a higher window resolution if it's only to maintain a certain aspect ratio? YES, but make sure it's blank space.
  • Can I use screen effects like CRT or scanlines that may exceed the actual chosen resolution limit? YES! But, make sure it's optional and that the game itself is 64x64 before effects.
  • My dev environment allows me to draw lines, rectangles, circles, .etc, may I use those functions? For most cases no. I know you want a huge sun for your desert level but you can't cheat and draw a circle to save graphics space. Good thinking though ;). (Exceptions is using a line function to draw scanlines for a screen filter effect, or using a large rectangle to fade the screen, etc.)
  • How the #&@% am I supposed to make a game with such limited space. Don't give up! I promise it's doable. Our ancestors made game on ancient computers with only 64k of ram and 4 color displays. For inspiration check out this and this!
