A game jam is just like a hackathon, but for creating games! You spend the allotted time programing, designing mechanics, creating art, and writing music to build an impressive game from scratch. This is a one of a kind experience, and you'll learn a lot by participating.
Not to worry! Many students join game jams without ever having made a game before. If you have the motivation, this is the perfect place to learn. We have volunteers stationed in TASC1 9204 who will be on site the entire event and who can help with any issues you might run into as a beginner.
As for where to start, Unity and Godot are two game engines that are easy to learn & particularly well suited to game jams. You've got this!
hint: there are a lot of free art & music assets you can use in the event! You need not rely on programmer art :)

The event is open to any Vancouver post-secondary students, but it will be free for all SFU Students. Non-SFU students need to pay a small $10 fee to help compensate for meals. We currently have a limit of about 100 tickets, so make sure to claim yours soon!
The event will be taking place in TASC1 9204 at SFU's Burnaby campus. Feel free to set-up & work anywhere in the Applied Science Building as well.
The following is an approximate schedule of the event:
July 1st:
July 2nd:
Can I work in a team? Yes! Feel free to work alone or with others. There is a recommended max team size of 6 people, so beware the challenges of being in too large of a group!
What is the theme? The theme will be announced in the opening ceremony & on our discord when the jam begins!
What can I make my game in? Anything, provided you can upload a file that runs on Windows, Linux, or browsers, and doesn't require any additional hardware or software.
What assets can I use? The game should be developed during the jam, but you may use pre-existing code and can use whatever art and audio assets you would like.
When should I submit my game? You can submit your game at any point after the jam begins. If you submit early, you can update the game at any time before the jam closes. You must submit your game by July 2nd @ 12:15pm. Please plan to submit it at least an hour in advance!
Who will judge the games? Games will be judged by our judges, and results will be released in the following several weeks.
What will the games be judged on? We will be considering Enjoyment, Creativity, Technical Impressiveness, and Aesthetics as criteria, however your best bet is to make a game that's fun to play!
Is there a Discord I can join? Yes! Please join here.
