We've all heard of mods for popular games like Minecraft and Among Us. But most games on itch.io don't have any mods, and most weren't made with mods in mind. The goal of this game jam is to make gams specifically to be modded. Part 2 of the jam will involve making the actual mods. Part 2 will start when this jam ends, as the rating period is starting. This will give people the ability to better judge how well the games can be modded (although you can still rate it based on the documentation if you aren't modding that game).
Theme:
The theme will be announced when the jam starts. Vote on it here:
The theme for the mods will be different, and I'll make a poll for that once this one has been announced. All of these options were randomly generated here.
Prizes:
There won't be any big prize for this, but I'm going to make a video modding the top game and I strongly recommend other people do the same with their favorite games. I'll post a link to the video here once the rating period is over.
Rules:
- Only one game submission per person. On the other jam, you can submit as many mods as you want. The goal of this rule is to make sure as many games as possible have mods, and hopefully some have multiple mods.
- NSFW is allowed but make sure you mark it as such! It's also discouraged because in order to get good ratings, you need as many people as possible to play your game.
- Although you don't have to mark it as NSFW on itch itself (as far as I know), please also put a warning in the description if your game contains graphic violence or imagery of any common triggers. Feel free to ask in the forum what topics might count.
- If a NSFW game wins this jam, the video I make with it will be censored and the mod I make for it will probably be to make it SFW somehow.
- You can use any engine you want, but your game must be able to be modded without one. Eg, the modder needs to be able to use plain code (although the language can be specific, eg if you make a game with Java it's okay if people can only mod it with Java).
- While you can choose the language that a modder needs, it's recommended to make it as easily moddable as possible, because that's one of the rating criteria. For example, Minecraft before datapacks would get 1 star from me in that criterium, but now that it has datapacks it'd get a 4 or 5 because people no longer need to use Java, download special tools, and use special clients to play with the mods.
- You should provide documentation on how to make a mod for your game. Eg, if you use Java and you need certain classes and functions to be used, provide a list of those and what they do. If it's a web game and your idea of a mod is a Chrome extension, paste helpful links to making one, and list things in your game that people can modify. This documentation can be in the description directly, or you can link to another website.
