Minecraft Mod Showdown

Welcome to the Minecraft Mod Showdown, the week-long game jam held by the Computer Science Society (CSS) and the Games Development Society (GDS)! Gather up your friends into teams of up to 4 people for the blockiest competition yet!

What can be made?

Minecraft is very liberal in what is considered a mod here, and we will be as well! You can submit any of the following to the showdown:

  • Mods (made with Fabric, Forge, etc.)
  • Plugins (made with Paper, Spigot, etc. - including BungeeCord and Velocity, proxy software that handles a network of servers)
  • Datapacks
  • Resource Packs
  • Shaders
  • Addons (for those on Bedrock Edition)

You can submit just one of these, or even a combination of mods - for example, a datapack that requires a resource pack, an optional clientside mod that can communicate with a serverside mod/plugin, anything you can think of, but the prize will remain the same regardless of what is submitted.

What are the rules?

  1. As mentioned above, you can only have a team of up to 4 people. (That's as many as we can give prizes for)
  2. Don't make anything that could violate CSS' Discord rules (no harassment, no NSFW, no secretly sharing assignment answers)
  3. All mods have to first be created after the competition begins. If you are making a derivative/fork of an existing project, please make note of this in your submission and credit the original work.

Please note that violation of these can result in your submission being disqualified. If you're not sure whether your mod would break these rules, you're more than welcome to message anyone on committee or within GDS in advance just to check!

How will the mod be judged?

Mods are very complicated security wise, so to be safe, the judges cannot run your mods on their PCs. Instead, you'll make a submission with a video demonstration, showcasing your mod and how it works. If you need extra accommodations, let a committee member of either CSS or GDS know. The mod that comes first placed will be rewarded a very aptly Minecraft-themed prize.

The judging criteria we will be using is the same as the Discord Botathon, of which includes the following:

  • Feature-Set - what features the mod has, how in-depth/elaborate they are, and whether they serve the key purpose of the mod.
  • Functionality - how well the mod works, and whether it can handle erroneous inputs/game states properly.
  • Creativity - how much does it push the boundaries of a traditional mod? (This is in respect to it challenging the potential technical limitations of Minecraft itself)
  • Originality - how may it separate itself from other mods that serve a similar purpose?

Results

Since GDS committee members have submitted a project, only committee from CSS have judged the submissions.

  • 1st - Emblem Rings
  • 2nd - Mo' TNT
  • 3rd -
  • 4th - i give it 5 big booms
