Hello and welcome to the first ever Mixed Media Jam! In this jam you have to create a game of any kind using a mixed media inspired art style. That means combining different artistic elements such as 2D illustrations, pixel art realtime 3D models, pre-rendered 3D models, photos, paper crafts, etc into an art style for your game. In terms of what counts as mixed media I mostly trust you to use your own intuition to determine that. You can use some of the examples I've given at the bottom of this page as a guideline for your game's style. If you'd like a more concrete definition you can think of a mixed media game combines at least 3 artistic elements to form its style. So for instance if your game makes use of pre-rendered 3d models, real life photos, and pixel art that would be considered a mixed media game! This isn't a hard an fast rule so please don't worry too much about if your game fits in the exact criteria. Please don't feel like this is an "artist only" jam anyone can join whether you're an experienced artist or you've never drawn in your life. You don't have to be "good" to make amazing art.
OPTIONAL THEME:
This will be announced when the jam starts. Basically it's a word or phrase that you can optionally choose to integrate into your game in some way. Like for instance if the theme was "unstable" and you wanted to use the theme you would have to find a way to incorporate instability into the game. Maybe through a game mechanic or the story or maybe just as a tiny part of the game. It's really just a guideline for ideas.
RULES/GUIDELINES:
1. Make a mixed media game! This can be thought of as a game that combines at least 3 artistic elements to form its style: 2D illustrations, pixel art realtime 3D models, pre-rendered 3D models, photos, paper crafts, etc. Another definition you can use is a game that utilizes artistic elements that are unconventional for game art styles. For example if your game consists paper crafts and pixel art that would also be considered mixed media. Use your discretion to determine if your game fits, at the end of the day the jam is for fun so don't sweat it too much!
2. You can work on a project you had started prior to when the jam starts as long as you are actively working on the game during the jam period
3. You can work as a team or by yourself! There's no limit to how many people you can have but you probably wanna keep your group pretty tight knit.
4. You can use any engine as long as it runs on windows (RPG Maker, Godot, Game Maker, Unity, Unreal, Ren'Py, Scratch??? Anything). You can even make a mod/romhack of a pre-existing game.
5. Your game can be in any genre as long as it has a mixed media art style per the specifications of this jam
6. Tag any NSFW material appropriately in the description of the game.
7. NO GEN AI
TIPS:
1. You don't have to make everything yourself! You can use and edit stock assets or images throughout your game just make sure you properly credit what you use. Also make once again make sure the assets you use are not AI generated!
2. Try to keep the scope small. Aim to make something that could be completed in an hour or maybe just a few minutes.
3. Don't put too much pressure on yourself! It's all just for fun! If you can't get everything you want done in the time frame or things aren't as polished as you'd like don't beat yourself up about it. You can always work more on it later.
INSPIRATION:
For anyone who may be struggling to come up with any ideas for a mixed media game here are some games that make use of mixed media in their artstyles or are mixed media adjacent
