minMAX Game Jam is a Jam focused on making multiple minimalist games over the course of a week!

This is a game jam where you can decide whether or not you want to push yourself!
Do you want to try to create more complex games but risk not being able to make enough to qualify?
Or do you just want to take it easy and make a bunch of chill games?
It's up to you!

What do I mean by "multiple minimalist games"?

You'll be making multiple games for this Game Jam, with a minimum of 3!
Your games don't have to be simple. In fact, your games can be as complex as time constraints allow! The minimalist aspects just comes in terms of some gameplay and aesthetics, as follows:

  • Limited Palette! The less colours, the better (2 colours is a fun challenge to try artistically!)
  • Core Mechanics! Keep the amount of game mechanics pretty low, whether that means that you have only 1 or 2 buttons in a game, or that in another there's only a few different pieces you can arrange, it's really up to your imagination!
  • Playtime! You don't have to worry about making long games, so don't stress yourself out too much about game length. (15 minutes at the least)

How am I supposed to make multiple games in this amount of time??

That's the challenge, friend!
As tips for how you could schedule yourself, you could make 1 game per day, or make 3 games in 3 days and spend 2 days polishing them, or anything else really! Just remember, the less games you make, the more you need to do to impress.

Now let's go over the technical stuff:

  • No NSFW
  • Keep it Free
  • The only work you can do prior to the start of the jam is brainstorming!
  • You can work in a team, with a partner, or by yourself, it's up to you :)
  • Any engines are allowed, as long as your games are easily accessible
  • 3 Games Minimum
  • Stick to the minimalist guidelines laid out above!

Games will be rated on a few different categories!

Quantity - How many games were you able to turn out during the jam?
Quality - How polished and streamlined your games/assets/mechanics/controls are
Fun - How enjoyable is your game?
Theme - How well does it adhere to the theme?

Since rating is open to anybody who's submitted a game, make sure that you keep these in mind when rating, so we can ensure that we're fair with our judgement :)

And last, but certainly not least:

Since there's multiple games you'll be submitting, just pick one out of the list of different themes for them!
BUT REMEMBER! You can only use a theme once per Jam!

  • Containment (Keep it contained)
  • Darkness (Darkness is a core mechanic or idea in your game)
  • Procedural (Procedural levels, characters, assets, whatever you want to interpret this as)
  • Travel (It's about the journey, not the destination)
  • Infection (A disease, plague, sickness, or corruption of some kind)
  • Music (Music is a core mechanic or idea in your game)
  • Unusual (A new genre-combination, strange new mechanics, or just generally something you wouldn't see anywhere else)
  • Rules (A strict set of guidelines for the player to follow... or break)
  • Ruins (This could be the setting, gameplay mechanic, or even the character... well maybe not the character)
  • Cold (Cold of some kind is a core mechanic or idea in your game)

If you've used all of these themes over the course of this jam, you need to take a break.
Or maybe you could add something else to the games perhaps?...
