Welcome to Melon Jam 2!

Theme

The theme for MelonJam 2 is to create a game whose title would be "Crosslife." There are many interpretations and we encourage you to be creative, but here are a few ideas to get started (you are by no means limited to these!):
- Having a player's actions affect multiple worlds simultaneously and allow the user to switch between them
- A game where the user controls two characters on screen whose moves are linked with one another
- An evolution based game where you breed certain animals and try to create the strongest creature

Schedule

The actual competition for MelonJam 2 will commence on July 23rd at 8:00 AM Pacific Time (11:00 AM Eastern).  Submissions will close on July 25th at 6:00 PM Pacific Time (9:00 PM Eastern Time). Please submit on our devpost page https://melon-jam-2.devpost.com/ in order to be considered for prizes! You are still more than welcome to submit on itch.io as well to share your projects with the community.

Prizes

There are two categories for prizes: novice and advanced. The novice prize is opt-in; only high school students and younger may compete for this prize. The advanced prize is open to anyone—both amateur and experienced game developers may compete for this prize. Both amateur and experienced developers will make use of the same theme, which better enables them to offer advice to each other on the Devpost Discussions section or on the Discord server (https://discord.gg/BY5473P).

Judging Criteria

  • Gameplay, or how well the game squeezes out value from its mechanics
  • Graphics, or how impressive the project looks
  • Game Feel, or how appropriate the controls feel (snappy platforming, impactful heavy attacks, or the like).
  • Innovation, or how “new” a concept in the game is (new graphics, new gameplay, new interpretations of old concepts, etc.)
  • Theme, or how interesting the game's interpretation of the game jam theme is.

We are excited to see what you will create! Good luck on all your projects!
