Light Novelber 2022

Do you like light novels? Want to make your own? Or part of your own? Or just make a small thing tangentially related to one, like a small interactive text thing or a cover mock-up? Then you're in the right place!

Light Novelber is a celebration of art, writing, community creations, queer stories and silly light novel titles. In the form of a jam that lasts the whole month!

Here's a chance to try your hand at something creative in a safe, supportive environment. Best of luck! <3

Theme

You don't have to follow the theme if you already have an idea in mind. You can even continue a previous unfinished entry of yours! But if you'd like to have some guidance or inspiration,  this year's Light Novelber theme is:

—UNPAUSE—

Anything that was put on hold can start again; anything that returns to motion, however long it stopped moving, can reach its intended destination. A lot of the time, it just takes time.

Whether it's snapping back to reality or letting loose dreams that were put on the back burner, ending a pause means a new start, but also another chance at an ending. The best time to pick something back up was when we put it down; the second-best time is now.

Entry Format

Light Novelber originally placed an emphasis on the light novel format/style/theme, but other formats and mediums are accepted. A lot of light novels differentiate themselves from most other popular fiction stories by focusing on easygoing slice-of-life topics. But that's not a hard-and-fast rule; feel free write what you're inspired to!

Here are some examples:

  • Short story
  • Single chapter
  • 1-3 chapters as a preview of a longer work in progress story
  • Book cover
  • Comic
  • Art
  • Interactive fiction (e.g. twine story)
  • ...and anything in-between, illustrated or not!
  • Even if you just write the beginning of something you want to continue later, that's already plenty!
  • And, similarly, even if you just wrap up and put a bow on something you started earlier, that's completely in the spirit of this jam!
