IMPORTANT SURPRISE NOTICE: The jam has been extended by one week! We do this in every jam to allow people to finish their games with less stress and less crunching. Your health is important: Remember to take breaks, drink water, talk to humans, have fun, be stupid.
Welcome to KIFASS! The game jam that wants you to Keep it Fun and Stupid, Stupid!
This is a relaxed jam that’s suitable for everyone from beginner to pro. Games must be made with DragonRuby Game Toolkit, using the theme:
Join the DragonRuby Discord to chat with other jammers!
Any games that do not follow these rules will be removed from the jam.
Q: I don't like coding but I'm good with graphics, sound, writing or some other valuable skill. Can I join?
A: Absolutely. We encourage participants to work with a team. Come to the DragonRuby Discord and ask if anyone wants to team up. The same goes for coders who want to team up with other creative types
Q: Can I start working on my game before the jam starts?
A: Yes! Start whenever you like!
Q: What if I've never made a game before?
A: This is a beginner-friendly jam. The sample games are designed to be used as an easy starting point for everyone, regardless of their experience
Q: Can I submit an unfinished game?
A: Yes but please submit it near the end of the jam. Do not submit non-functional games
Q: Is this a ranked jam?
A: Sort of! Not really. You can rate games on "boinginess". What that means is up to you! We really just wanted to enable itch's ratings queue to help people better discover the entries. No awards for top rankings except the satisfaction of being first on some kind of list! Yay!
KIFASS! is organised by members of the DragonRuby community. DragonRuby Game Toolkit is a 2D game engine that’s super easy to get to grips with but powerful enough to make professional games. It uses the awesome Ruby programming language and it can easily build games for Windows, Mac, Linux, Web, mobile, consoles and VR.
DragonRuby is giving away free, commercial licenses to jam participants. You will be able to download DragonRuby Game Toolkit for free shortly before the start of the jam (this offer has now expired).

DragonRuby ships with tons of sample projects you can use as starting points for your own games.
This very simple example can get you bouncing off the walls in no time (think Pong or Breakout). You can find it in the samples folder under 04_physics_and_collisions/01_simple
This sample uses maths to make a ball bounce off lines, taking into account gravity and bounciness. You can find it in the samples folder under 04_physics_and_collisions/11_bouncing_ball_with_gravity
There are many more boingy samples to choose from, ranging from simple to complex and covering different styles of game. Take a look in the samples folder under 04_physics_and_collisions.
We've put together additional information on the Tutorials & Resources page.
