WHAT IS "GRIND FICTION"?
Also known as "Shibuya Punk" and "animemo",  etc. is used to describe media that is often set in an urban setting and focuses on themes of rebellion. There is a heavy emphasis with music, graffiti and sports, more specifically skating/biking/etc.

EXAMPLES OF "GRIND FICTION":

There are many examples such as:

  • The World Ends With You (game + anime)
  • Lethal League  (game)
  • Bomb Rush Cyberfunk  (game)
  • FLCL (anime)
  • Splatoon  (game)
  • Unbeatable  (game)
  • Gachiakuta (anime)
  • Zenless Zone Zero  (game)
  • Scott Pilgrim (comic / game / movie / show)
  • & so much more!

The goal of this jam is to bring back this awesome genre full force!

RULES

  • No AI generated assets and/or content. This includes but is not limited to: artwork, models, music, writing, etc!
  • If your game covers sensitive content, can trigger epilepsy, etc. be sure to include a content warning!
  • NO NSFW, NO porn imagery or sfx.
    • CLARIFICATIONS:
      • Characters with big breasts are allowed, but do not oversexualize them.
      • Characters are allowed to wear "sexy" outfits, but do not make the designs too explicit. 
  • No offensive content.
    • CLARIFICATIONS:
      • Caricatures are fine as they are the basis of a lot of character design, but we will not allow offensive caricatures created to dehumanize demographics of people based on race, gender, sexuality, etc. 
  • No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, islamophobia, antisemitism, etc.
  • You must only start working after the jam begins. 
  • Practice good sportsmanship! Don't speak poorly on others or their submissions, and don't be a sore loser/winner! (Applicable for years where they are ranked)
  • You are welcome AND encouraged to stream/share the process of creating your game.
  • You can start planning and creating assets (art, music/sfx, etc.) for your game jam game prior to the event, but do not actually start the process of creating the game until the event starts. (This does not apply to coding, no coding prior to the events' start!)
  •  10. You are welcome to use:
    • Free / creative commons 0 assets
    • Assets you've purchased/licensed
    •  Resources/assets/code/etc. provided by the engine you're using
    • Assets you've made in the past
    • If you use assets not created by you or one of your teammates, please ensure that you:
      • Check that it was NOT created with AI.
      • List the creator in the credits, even if they say on their page you don't have to.
      • Follow any specific rules/credits pertaining the assets specified by the creator.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Your game MUST be in theme!
  • Your game doesn't have to be super polished, just playable!
  • No engine restrictions, work with what you like best!
  • No genre restrictions or themes for this specific year (we want to work out all the kinks)!
  • Be sure to list your credits!

If you are 18 years of age or older and would like to join the Discord, CLICK HERE ! We will be using this server for the jam every year to communicate, help find teams, etc! You do not have to participate in the game jam itself to join the server--we welcome any streamers / content creators that would like to assist in showcasing the games and anyone who is just interested in keeping up with the jam!  Be mindful that this is also my own personal community server -- if you're not interested in that portion of the server, only select the "Game Dev/Jam Section" option when entering the server.
