One Scare. One Chance. Make It Count.

Welcome to the A Single Jumpscare Game Jam, where developers are challenged to build tension, suspense, and atmosphere all for a single, unforgettable moment. Your goal is simple: design a game that revolves around one jumpscare—but make it count. With horror at its core, this jam will test your ability to craft a build-up that leads to a perfect, heart-stopping scare.

Why Focus on a Single Jumpscare?

Horror games are often filled with relentless scares, but sometimes less is more. This jam focuses on the art of anticipation. Whether it’s the creak of a door, the subtle flicker of a light, or the growing sense of unease in an empty hallway, all the tension must culminate in one perfectly timed scare. The challenge is in the pacing and build-up, creating a slow burn that keeps the player on edge, waiting for the moment they know is coming—but not knowing when.

Guidelines for Designing the Perfect Jumpscare

To create a powerful experience, focus on:

1. Atmosphere and Pacing: Build tension over time. Use sound, lighting, and environmental storytelling to unsettle the player. The longer you make them wait, the bigger the impact of your single jumpscare.

2. Subtle Hints: Tease the player with small details that suggest something is about to happen. Whether it's a distant noise or a shadow that moves in the corner of their eye, keep them alert and anxious.

3. The Moment: The single jumpscare is your payoff. It can be loud and startling, or quiet and sudden. Just make sure it’s impactful and memorable.

4. Aftermath: Even after the scare, leave the player lingering in the world you’ve built. Don't just end it—make them sit in the aftermath of what they just experienced.
