ZINE MAKER’S GUIDE FOR HYPNOKINK ZINE WEEK!!!

Tips before we start:

• It is not possible to get a “good grade” in zinemaking so stop trying
• The less perfect your zine is, the more perfect your zine is

Decide on a topic

Zines are a manifestation of ANYTHING! I think they’re best when they’re weird, quirky, and creative. Here’s some ideas:

• Hypno poems, songs, or rhyming couplets
• Microfiction
• A dream you had once/a hot scene you had
• A bunch of mantras
• Rambling about something you really like about hypnosis
• A few tips that helped your hypnotic experience
• "What does hypnosis feel like to me?"
• Self-hypnosis or writing prompts
• Doodles
• Collage designs
• A magical or spiritual hypno zine
• A trancey word you like and why you like it
• Micro TTRPG
• A mini-dive into one of your favorite techniques or “fun fact”
• A zine you make while hypnotized??

Outline some content

How many “sections” do you think your zine might have? If you’re doing poems, for example, how many poems come to mind? You can even write out some of your first-draft content in this step -- this is to help you think about…

Deciding on format

The hardest part! You might change your mind on this a couple times! What should your zine look like?

Simple one-page zines are the easiest -- for you to make, and also to print and fold. You can easily make a one-page zine that has four or six “pages” that require no cutting or stapling. You could even make a no-fold, “poster” style zine!

You could also experiment with double-sided one-page zines, like those trifold brochure style things we used to make in school.

If you REALLY WANT more than one page, stapling and collating will be required! Remember that (at least I) want to print out as many people’s zines as possible and less effort = better! But do what calls to you!

CONSIDER:

• An all-text one-page zine can handle about 500 small words maximum
• How many “sections” you have could inform how many “pages” you want

Make your content

Draft it out and polish in Google Docs or something! Make sure your content is “almost done” before…

Making your zine

Use a template provided or make your own and start porting your content into a zine-able form. Canva is a GREAT resource for this. Import a template (like the provided ones) into Canva and start organizing your content and making it look snazzy. Think about:

• Cover/title! Make sure your name or handle or website is on there somewhere too.
• Any doodles/art? HIGHLY recommend drawing a little something even if you “can’t draw” -- a symbol or spiral in MS Paint is fine, it’s yours!
• Font and design, play around!
• How printer-friendly your zine is -- an all-black background or tons of saturated color everywhere is NOT great! Minimal or grayscale will be the friendliest for most people, but don’t let that stop you from using color if you want.
• Is your page content in the right orientation for when it’s folded?

If you are feeling driven, you can hand-make or hand-write your zine on a piece of paper and then scan it in. You could cut/paste clips from magazines, etc…

You’re encouraged to additionally (or instead) make a device-readable PDF version by doing something like the following:

• In whatever word processor you use, set the page size to A5 (or, use Canva to make a multi-page zine)
• Make your fonts nice and big
• Pages of your content!
• Download as PDF

Or just cutting the pages off of your printable version and putting them all right-side up :)

Posting

With all your project files: don't forget to name your files with the title of the project and your username -- put your username and social media on the zine too.

If your zine is intended to produce a hypnotic effect, or contains sensitive content, make sure you appropriately tag/CW it!

You can host your zine anywhere you like, but itch.io is a fantastic resource for this. Share on social media and use the hashtag “#hypnokinkzines” so we can all find them :)
