Extended submission time by 60 mins to allow people to get their games submitted comfortably.
If you missed the deadline, please get in touch with me and I can get you a late submission link! I'm contactable on discord at HonestDan#0709

THEME ANNOUNCEMENT:
Thank you so much for joining the game jam! The jam is now live, and the theme has been announced: "DREAM". For every submit game, Dan will donate £1 to the charity SpecialEffect. Dan will be playing through ALL submitted games the weekend that follows the jam (18th/19th).

Remember this is a non-cram jam that is not competitive and people of all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to take part. Please do not not exhaust yourself, you have 9 days including 2 weekends to complete your jam entry! Even if you are unable to finish your game, or perhaps you have just designed a game or created a set of art assets for a game, you are still welcome to submit your entry!

If you need to submit the game after the deadline, please just send me a message (in my Twitch chat, discord, twitter). In addition to the theme, participants are welcome to apply one of the three modifiers to their game jam entry as an extra challenge:

The modifiers are completely optional, though for any game deemed to have incorporated a modifier into their game organically, Dan will donate an extra £1 to charity at the end of the jam. Need help with the theme?

Feel free to join the discord and discuss further in the#honest-jam-3 channel, or within my Twitch chat (www.twitch.tv/honestdangames) while I'm streaming. In the mean time, here's some ideas to get you started: Mechanics

  • You play in a dream world, where you can imagine new weapons to wield in order to defeat foes
  • The game takes place in dream, but various things in the dream world can wake you up and prevent you finishing the "dream"
  • The main character could feast on the dreams of young children to grow stronger
  • You need to keep quiet in the game to avoid disturbing the sleeping enemies

Thematic

  • The game is set in a dream world: This could be an RPG fantasy setting, futuristic space pirates, super powers.
  • A game which is set on the concept of dreams and hopes

If feeling uninspired, you could use this as an excuse to get working on the foundations of your dream game!

The theme is encouraged, but if it's the difference between taking part in the jam or not, then please feel free to bypass the theme and still make a game and submit it! Thanks again for signing up to the jam! If you want to support  the fund-raising, feel free to visit the twitch stream or donate directly here https://live.justgiving.com/pages/donate/aebf13d2-f44c-402e-b33b-3299db9149c2 Honest Dan @HonestDanGames

Jam Info
The third official Honest Jam, hosted by HonestDanGames! The aim is to host a relaxed jam, where people can challenge their selves to create and learn at a pace that suits their own schedules and skillset. The jam runs over 9 days, but you are not expected to submit 9 days worth of work - the time frame is intended to make the gamejam more accessible for people who can't just cram for 3 days straight. Two weekends and 5 week days - hopefully that gives you a chance to take part!

Dan will be streaming throughout the week of the Honest Jam on Twitch! He will be raising money for charity (more info coming soon) and will be donating £1* for every game submitted to the jam. Last December we raised almost £2500 for charity, which was amazing! Feel free to join the community discord and share your progress over the duration of the jam!

Lacking time?
The most common format to enter a game jam is creating a computer game. HOWEVER feel free to submit only a game design doc or some character designs and concepts if that's all you have time / want to do! Remember that board games and card games are also a valid format for a game jam game - though if you want me to play it - it'll need to be exported into Table Top Simulator.

Who is HonestDanGames?
HonestDanGames is a professional game developer, who first started off his game dev journey back on Twitch in 2017. He streamed his learning full time for 18 months, before getting hired in a UK studio in 2019. He still streams today, though is unable to stream as often due to work commitments. He current streams every Monday, hosting Game Dev interviews and Feedback streams, and other occasional dev projects.

How does the Honest Jam work?
Here's likely expectations for the jam:

  • Over a week long, to allow people who work / have other commitments to still take part in a jam
  • You are discouraged from using the entire duration of the jam to cram in as much work as possible!
  • You are encouraged to create the game from scratch, but it is not enforced. Please make it clear upon submitting what parts of the game were not made from scratch
  • You can use art / audio / animation assets that aren't your own, just please credit them and make clear when submitting your game which parts were not originally created by you.
  • A theme will be announced on the Saturday at 12:00 UK Time (GMT) on my Twitch channel.
  • Jam participants are encouraged to create a game in the spirit of that theme!
  • Honest Dan will play and give feedback to every game submitted, likely the weekend following the Jam's conclusion.

Making games alone can be lonely. We want contributors to feel they can communicate during the jam, share progress screen shots, and ask for general support if they need. Dan will be streaming on Twitch during the Jam Week,  so feel free to hang out in Twitch chat when you're working. The community discord also has a section dedicated to the Game Jam.
