Earlier this year, I created Hobs for the Eternal TTRPG Jam - Jan 26 "Little Gods" but honestly that was just an excuse to create some goofy little dudes who, as we all know, are the best type of goblin, fairy folk, etc.

In between other projects, I decided to step back into this world and have some more fun. Couldn't help but think that others might be similarly tickled to do so.

Some inspiration:

  • the Dark Crystal
  • Star Wars
  • Pokemon
  • His Dark Materials
  • Labyrinth
  • Hellboy

Rules:

1. NO Generative AI whatsoever.

2. Any Hobs described within must adhere to the descriptions and traits as listed in the supplement. Here they are:

  • Loyal spirits that inhabit a home for as long as a family takes residence.
  • Summoned by a family in need.
  • The Call, as it is known, is only answered in a time of true desperation or, in the case of “resurrection”, true love.
  • They fill in gaps in household duties, but are not servile.
  • If mistreated the Hob will haunt the home with mischief and trickery until amends are made.
  • Amends include apologies and offerings of sweets and shinies.
  • Wayward Hobs go to Hob Hill with the Queen, Meabh, an ignoble fate.
  • Cannot die, exactly, but when gravely injured, the family must re-summon them, which can only be done on the full moon.
Hobs fade away when forgotten. Hobs are household spirits that, when properly treated, help out with duties around the home. Generally good natured and steadfast, they have a mischievous streak when upset or mistreated. They come in many shapes, sizes, & natures. They will take on the shape imagined by the youngest member of the family, so as not to alarm the most easily frightened.  Although the same Hob can serve a family for decades, it is not only possible but likely that the Hob’s appearance shifts from generation to generation. Some are cute, some are weird, some are animalian. One constant is they are rarely more than three feet tall and they carry traits that suit their household duties.

3. They should be whimsical, though they do not have to be cute, funny, or kind.

That's pretty much it.

Please feel free to make any of the following, plus anything I might not have thought of, though I will specify it should be for a TTRPG. It does not have to be made for Cairn, but should be compatible or easily convertible.

  • Adventures
  • New Backgrounds of people who interact with Hobs.
    • Hobcatcher
    • Hob Trainer
  • Art. Please draw your Hobs. Perplexing Ruins* has the perfect vibe, but not nearly the only.
  • Items or locations
  • Other supplements
  • Whatever you like!

We'll run this through the end of September because I don't want to compete against Mörktober.
