Whahay! Join in the Monthly Game Dev challenge for December 2023!
Inspired by 1GAM, the goal is to make a fun, well polished vertical slice of a game. Feel free to work as a team or work solo, and remember to keep the scope of the game low enough.
You are welcome to use assets that are premade, or do everything from scratch. When you’re ready feel free to submit through itch.io.
At the end of the month, we will play through the games live and give our thoughts feedback.
It's totally okay to submit unfinished projects, and if you want to continue your project from last month feel free! Just make sure to submit ANYTHING by the end of the month. :)
The optional theme for the month is: DREAMS.
It may seem like a monumental challenge to develop a game in such a short time frame. But I know you can do it! May you all backflippe your way to success.
Feel free to check out these resources for help on how to get started if you've never made a game before.
For a tl;dr breakdown of the rules:
Team or Solo
If you want to team up with someone else to get help with art, music, programming, or design you are more than welcome to. If you're more comfortable going it alone, that's fine as well.
Keep the scope simple
Please absolutely make a game that you feel passionate about. But I don't recommend making a 40 hour procedurally generated MMORPG or anything like that. Think of a simple concept and take some time to flesh it out a bit. You could also look at an existing simple gameplay idea (Tetris) and add something crazy to it (Tetris with realistic physics).
Premade assets and engines are welcome
Feel free to use any premade assets and any existing engine that you like. For recommendations, I would recommend asking over on our Discord or posting here. I like to use GODOT (which is free) and RPG Maker (which is not free but affordable). Pico8 is another great tool to use. You can also continue the project that you were making last month if you so choose, so long as you have submitted for the last jam and submit for this jam!
Time frame is one month!
Try to use your time as efficiently as possible to complete your game. Don't worry if you don't complete it in time, you could always continue to work on it after the month is over.
Enjoy gamdeving' in this chill winter season and I look forward to seeing what you all come up with!
