Grim Dark Half Off is the reason I fell into the bloody depths of Conan the Barbarian—and that obsession has bled into the ethoes of HOUDINI Magazine. His influence is etched into the marrow of my work: the grit, the fatalism, the unflinching stare into the abyss of dying civilizations. Though our interactions were few, his presence loomed large, a titan of grimdark philosophy, fitness, and unrelenting strength. Now, as he faces hospice care for a rare and vicious cancer, I feel a profound sorrow. But sorrow is not enough.

This man is a warrior. A thinker. A man who carved his own path through the wastelands of modern life, embracing the barbarian’s truth: that civilization is a thin veneer over the raw, howling dark. He shared his battles with us, physical, mental, spiritual, and in doing so, became a kind of patron saint for those of us who crave stories where survival is earned with sweat and steel.

So here’s what we’re doing.
