It's the new year, and you know what that means! The Great Gatsby's finally entered public domain, which means it's about time we get our grubby little mitts all over it. Now before you run off to work on your project, I just wanna say a few words.

In this day and age it's pretty rare that things enter the public domain- at the soonest, Star Wars enters it in 2072, nearly a hundred years after its first installment. Copyright law exists in its current state to keep intellectual properties trapped in glass boxes long, long after their creators have passed on, to the benefit of nobody but the corporations that scoop up the rights. So, I see this not just as a fun opportunity to make a game where you get to fire green lasers at a city-sized Gatsbytron From Outer Space (though it is, please make that). It's also a chance to connect with our past and see how it comments on our present, to celebrate the way new voices build on the old, and remind ourselves how nothing truly goes to waste as long as there's someone out there that sees value in it.

For the month of January, we fight against the tide of corporate ownership of our cultural touchstones! This month, and forever, we reclaim creation for the creators. Make something awesome, y'all.

Rules:

  • Any form of submission is welcome! Games, stories, art, essays, anything you feel inspired to create is fair game.
  • The jam will run through the month of January.  You can work alone or in teams, but be sure to credit everyone who contributed.
  • Submissions found to be racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise hateful or harmful will be removed. This isn't to say you can't comment on the problems of the era, but replication isn't commentary, and if you're not of the groups being harmed think very carefully about what you're actually saying.
